In another thread, someone lamented that their wife of many years had never been to any more than 3 US states in her life. I found that very sad.

I'm curious: which US states have you visited?

Here is my personal breakdown. There may be some other states which I have visited but was too young to remember. I also don't count numerous flights connecting in Chicago and Atlanta.

I live in Texas. I've been to California, New York, Colorado, Missouri, Maryland and the district of Columbia, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, and Arkansas. I've been through Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia, and New Jersey at least, on account of going by train or bus rather than air.

Plus the following Canadian provinces:

Montreal

I've been on the ground walking around a bit in Vermont, but they wouldn't let us stay on the bus; my family once drove to Florida and passed through several states on the way.

Plus Quebec.

No. I left out Illinois and Georgia in my list for the same reason.

I would count driving across a state...if the state is big enough to make it an investment of your time. Driving across Vermont wouldn't count. Driving across Nevada or Utah should count.

All (except Rhode Island). Lived in Wisconsin (mostly), Illinois, Florida, Texas, California, Washington, Idaho, Virginia and Hawaii. I've also visited Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. I probably should go to Rhode Island, but I can't really think of a reason that doesn't just seem a little too obsessive/compulsive to me.

John, I'm shocked that a submariner has never been to the Naval War College in Newport, RI. I've been there for numerous symposia and to give briefings to the staff.

Well, then maybe scratch Nebraska off my list, too. I drove through South Sioux City, NE from North Sioux City, ND to have dinner in Sioux City, IA. Three states in less than five minutes.

Does going to Four Corners count as visiting Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico simultaneously?

I am embarrassed to respond...but I will.

I always say my wife and I are the least-traveled people I know.

I have lived in New York all my life. My wife was born & raised in Vermont and has lived in NY the past 28 years (including a couple years in college--where we met. :D ) I CAN say I've seen almost all parts of NY, though--including NYC, Long Island, the Catskills (lived there for 6 years!), the Capitol District (Albany-area--where I've lived most of my life), the southern tier, western NY (Buffalo/Niagara region), the Finger Lakes, Central NY (Syracuse--4 years at the University!), the Adirondacks & North Country.

Until 1996, I used to joke that I had been as far north as Montreal, as far east as Cape Cod, as far south as Aberdeen, Maryland and as far west as Niagara Falls. Some trips since then have expanded my horizons slightly:

So...

New York
Vermont
Massachusetts
New Hampshire

Maryland
(short family trip as a child)

Florida
by way of I-95 through:
New Jersey
Delaware
Maryland
Virginia (overnight stays)
North Carolina (overnight stays)
South Carolina
Georgia (Took a side trip to Atlantic Ocean)

We also took a bus trip this year to Louisville, Kentucky
which took us through:
Pennsylvania
Ohio

That's it, I'm afraid. The only time we've left the US is to go into Canada at Niagara Falls and into Quebec (Montreal).

It's pretty sad. But we just haven't had the jones (or $$$) to travel. Our daughter wants to travel though. It will be interesting to see where travel takes here. She lives in Virginia now so I expect we will be making some trips there real soon! ;)

Bold states listed above are (to follow Dennis' Rules) those states in which I have spent some "real time" and didn't just "drive through."
