looks like R2 is getting a two disc set of this, with a commentary by John Carpenter , along with his remake, any word on a R1 SE with this as well? Yes i know that Uni has the Carpenter Version, i was just wondering if anyone had heard if WB was doing a SE of the original.

It's a two-disc set that doesn't contain both versions, simply it features 'an exclusive commentary by John Carpenter along with a restored print and a colourised version of the film'. Yeuccchhhh.

Universal did much the same thing with King Kong in R2, their 'restored print' being more than a jump behind Warners R1 and, yes, another bloody crayoned in version.

As a result, I don't have many hopes over their 'restored' claim, then again Warners R1 'SE' isn't that much to write home about, but I'm looking forward to the commentary.

well, i was wondering if anyone has heard of WB doing a SE for R1 the old snapper was sort of bare and the idea that Carpenter did a commentary sounds great , but i agree keep your box of crayons away. the only thing that has me more upset than a colorized version is that Paramount let Lions Gate have the Republics back, so i am still gong to have to wait to see if Invasion of the body snatchers ever gets treated right.

So R2 is getting the original film with a John Carpenter commentary? Huh; that actually might be interesting.

Have it on R2-DVD.

I like the two versions with colourzied stereo soundtrack that has so much dialogue panning.

The classic is on movies4men tonight B&W mono original.

The beaver looks at various pressings. Seems like the R2 is a little cropped off on the sides, I might get the R1 DVD if going cheap.

The Thing From Another World (1951)
Region 1 DVD single crash landed in the ice today!

I like the mono original mix from the start of RKO opening with the sound at normal speed.

There is some nice sub bass extension that I have enhanced for The Thing, plenty of bass mid that I can feel pressing on my body with some scenes, like throwing petrol over The Thing, or the electrical frying The Thing the sub bass is nice. The end credits kicks with bass thump on the drum and top end not harsh on the HF horn that is set to a comfortable level.

The B&W picture looks nice.

The subtitle text looks nice.

I have lost count how many times I watched this classic? Maybe 5 or so times off-air recorded on VHS during mid 1980's.

Watched so many times of the B&W and colour stereo, on region 2, well over 20 times.

Now watching the region 1

Ned "Scotty" Scott: And now before giving you the details of the battle, I bring you a warning: Everyone of you listening to my voice, tell the world, tell this to everybody wherever they are. Watch the skies. Everywhere. Keep looking. Keep watching the skies.

One more Two Things, the side by side of the two DVD editions.

I like the music playing over the main menu.

The trailer was a bit messed up with interlacying when pausing the image I can see lots of lines (but not on the main feature film).

Chapter 3 plane takes off and I have enhanced the playback though the Dolby CP500 with crossover at 250Hz rather than then usual 50Hz that I set it, for analog films. Also a little gentle enhancement on the EQ with a few boasts and cuts.

I can set the expander gate to release the highest peak levels on the SW otherwise if gate is set to off the softer sounds with dialogue would boom. It works well on sound effects and music or depending on the softness of the music that will remain below the gate release of the settings.

Bottom waterfall is plane take off centre channel.
Top waterfall is plane take off SW.

^ Chapter 3 inside the plane shows strange Thing of a waterfall with the bass mid waving around that has a nice feel to it sub.

You really need to look into fixing that stretching picture problem. Looks awful.

The R1 is a nice DVD and I hope they make a Blu-ray version of it soon.

I like it. It looks cool I mean why waste the picture size of the tv reducing it down to Academy ratio 1.33:1, it just doesn't look right on 16:9 tv's. If it was the video projector that I only bother to switch on, once every few years for myself.

Upscale 1080p is good enough for the DVD.

One more thing. I like the dirt and scratch marks on the print rather than some cleaned up version looking like plastic.

The turning on of the generator again to fry the thing, sure that was a sound effect used in TOS Star Trek?

A new 35mm print has no dirt or scratches on it (nor would one that's been run properly for hundreds of shows); why would you want any less than that at home? Agree that they shouldn't noise-reduce it to a waxy death, but there's no reason well-cared-for studio material should have external imperfections present on a video transfer.

You can't watch all of the screen modes with or without overscan on your set?

My old Panasonic Blu-ray player (x10 series) used to do that cropping. I replaced it with a Sony that does not do that. :)

The Thing facepalm. :P What I'm gonna do take the THX bluray set-up disc to Curry's pc-world electrician, and test every single TV until I see one that can display the test cards probably?

Chapter 20 is exciting the bass mid and sub bass feel it against my body, when they throw petrol over The Thing and the sound of the fire extinguishers sounds cool, a bit like the remake THE THING (1982) expect flamethrowers being used.

That's funny Thing I also record BBC2 around mid 1980's I think it was on early evening time. I don't have the recording no more.

The Thing was on movies4men last week early morning hours but I hate the compression and high levels when fader is -15.0db they just raise the levels.

Hi Malcolm,

I downloaded the broadcast you speak of, via iPlayer last December. I was really excited at the prospect of getting the film in HD, as claimed, for some reason though the BBC simply uploaded the SD version to both SD and HD streams. As soon as I projected it I could see it wasn't true HD, so pulled out my remastered B&W UK DVD to compare and sure enough, there was no difference. In fact, if anything the DVD was better... :(

If you haven't seen it there's a concurrent The Thing thread on HTF:
Note the WAC quote in the OP. Though Universal, not Warner, have the UK rights, at the moment I doubt there is a true HD master anywhere.

My Samsung plasma is excellent at scaling SD content, i tend to just go by what the guide tells me, usually they say SD upscaled for some of the channels, for example ITV always says upscaled if it's not HD, now that you are telling me this it wouldn't surprise me if the BBC showing of Quatermass II was also SD, the original did look to have better detail levels and a fine grain to it.

I still have a recording from BBC 2 HD of the Errol Flynn version of Charge of the Light Brigade, never watched it yet, it's probably censored for horse cruelty and i bet it may not be proper HD either, i wish the BBC would label better.

Mind you even SD content should look better when broadcast on an HD channel due to the better bitrate they afford it, i often change from an SD satellite broadcast to the HD one and the difference is usually night and day, it's why i am not against films which only exist with SD masters being released on blu ray, the better codec and bitrate will allow for near perfect SD resolution as long as they don't edge enhancement and DNR the film to death and as long as they label it as SD content upscaled.

One other thing, completely off topic, i watched a film on BBC 3 HD last night, a mixed martial arts film, basically a rip off of The Karate Kid, it was called Never Back Down, i had to blink three or four times as the main actor looked like Tom Cruise, the eighties Cruise, take a look at him on IMDB and tell me he doesn't look like a young Tom Cruise, of course he is much taller.
