I've been seeing more and more of these commercials showing a huge chunk of thoroughfares with no one on it. Is it a digital thing or actual place?

I believe some of those commercial are done early in the morning to have less impact on traffic.

Even Times Square is relativly empty at 6:30 on a Sunday Morning. Diverting the rest of the traffic would be no problem.

The simple answer is that sometime's it's done at a quiet time of day and (with local authority co-operation) people are barred from the sections being filmed. In other cases it's done digitally.

Ahh...at least now I've got a place to go and do some "filming" in an otherwise "post-apocalyptic virus-plague city " in the future.
