Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
(1948) One of the few horror comedies that manages to be funny without flat out mocking the monsters. A lovely cap to the Universal Monster craze, and a damn fine Abbott and Costello film to boot. 4/5
So my total is 86. 84 Movies, 55 fist time viewings, and 4 TV Shows, all one hour long
first time viewings. I think they are 2 episodes equal 1 point for things like the Walking dead.
Now to start stock piling more films for next year!

Psycho
This classic movie still works, although nothing can match the first viewing of it. This time, it seemed to lose a little steam during the second part. The scenes with no Norman and little or no great Bernard Herrmann music dragged a bit compared to all the rest. Maybe some of that was Halloween fatigue, but I stand by my opinion that Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins are far and away the best actors in the movie.

During this challenge, I learned that these movies have to make me care about the protagonists before putting them in mortal peril and killing them off. The most successful scary movies have well-drawn characters in addition to their creative menaces.

Walking dead is episodic, so it would be Buffy rules, 2 episodes equal one point. So I added mine up correct. 2 episodes each of Walking Dead and American Horror Story for 2 points.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) - Grade: C
Finished up with some Buffy, but should have watched the TV version instead. I've long been a fan of the series, but had never watched the original film. It's amazing how different they are. The writing is pretty bad and there are a number of odd directorial choices made by Fran Kuzui. I'm rather surprised that anyone at the WB network (at the time) was willing to give this a chance, based on the original source material. Thankfully they did and the series improved greatly upon the ideas of the film.
Overall a rather disappointing year for me in the challenge. I also watch football, several returning TV series and, this year, more political television than usual, so my film watching time is limited. But most years, I at least make it to 31 films. I also tried to watch mostly new films this year, and most of them were very disappointing. My favorite new discovery was the classic Universal film, The Invisible Man. One positive, at least this year I didn't grade anything as "F", so I guess that's something to build on.
My total this year was only 19 films, with a few TV episodes thrown in.

"Specials" = 1 (Charlie Brown)

Fifteen year old Alex becomes disturbed by her little brother's friendship with the boy across the street. Attempt to continue the successful franchise doesn't offer anything new in terms plot or incident. Likability of the cast carries this only so far.

Someone is murdering the college seniors aboard a party train. Above average slasher pick is stylish and clever in spots, but the pacing is off for it to really score. Jamie Lee Curtis is among the passengers.

Two couples plan to spend the night in a carnival funhouse but get more than they bargained for. Underrated Tobe Hooper horror has a playful nature in the beginning but becomes increasingly intense as the story progresses. Sound design is exceptional aiding in the jumps and jolts.

Do Stephen King Movies Suck: Outside of the dramas, yes, mostly they do.
Am I insane for watching 13 WITCHCRAFT films? Yes.
Things I Learned:
--WITCHCRAFT, as a series, is less painful to watch than the CHILDREN OF THE CORN or HELLRAISER films.
--Horror movies of today are in a very bad slump.
--Don't spend a couple hundred dollars on VHS for this challenge because when you put these films on Ebay for $0.25 they still won't sell.
--Many reviews for made-for-TV movies of the 70s call them scary. Once I read the review I noticed the people calling them scary were recalling watching them as children.
--Shaggy was a loser in the 70s, somewhat cool in the 80s and today he drives hot cars and dates big breasted women.
--The old guys (Carpenter, Romero, Craven, Argento) really seem to be over.

--Youtube is great. I discovered so many complete titles that I've been searching for for years.

I'm curious, how many would be interested in a February challenge.
Valentine/Black History month challenge.
I know it wouldn't be exciting as a Halloween challenge and that most of it would consist of chick flicks
But it is an idea.

I have actually been toying with an idea of an 'Annual Christmas Movie Challenge' that follows this same mold. There are a lot of Holiday themed movies out there, and I would love to participate in that, or start it up. Of course December is generally a pretty busy month for me(and others I'm sure).

Here are some general "best of" categories for the month. I had a hard time deciding on a "best overall", so I left that category out. I'm not big on giving movies ratings, since a lot of times these things change over time, or often I'm just not sure what to think about a movie until some time has passed. Each of these movies (except the worst) I would happily re-watch.
Best foreign: I Saw the Devil
Best theatrical: Frankenweenie (okay, this was the ONLY theatrical movie I saw)
Best newer discovery: The Innkeepers
Best classic: The Curse of Frankenstein
Scariest: The Silent House (La Casa Muda)
Most fun: Cabin in the Woods
Weirdest: Mystics in Bali/Santa Sangre (tie)
Worst: Witchcraft

I'd be interested in a smaller challenge. Even something every other month. As Bryan said, starting with a Christmas thing is a good idea.

I'd be interested in a smaller challenge. I think I'm light on chick flicks though, unless I can count women in prison films.

I think a few years ago there was a crime/noir challenge that took place in april.

I was thinking a Documentary challenge would be a good one. Tons of things to watch and we might learn stuff other than things like "Don't go into the old dark house by yourself!"

I'm up for Christmas challenge.
There's a good number of Christmas movies/TV.
Also add in New Year's Eve movies with it.
Documentary challenge would be good during one of the summer months as there is no TV.
More time to get movies in.
I also love these best/worst categories.
I'll have to add them into the next challenge.
