I would get a Superbit of it for the DTS.
I would get it if it had a new cut.
But if it's just basically the same thing that I already have with some Spider-man 2 stuff shoved in then I would have to pass.

An "extended" cut is unlikely since Raimi shot very little he didn't need but he could go back and maybe take a leaf out of his good friends, the Coens, and actually edit it down a bit. I know I wouldn't mind getting rid of that dreadful roof top scene with GG and SM.

Spider-man and the hulk are probably the two movies that are fine just as is. unlike other films like lotr where longer is better.

Ever heard of porno? I can assure you it's way better than this "rain scene".

I think you guys need to pour some cold water on your laps when you're watching comic book movies.

bah! good thing i lost my VCD copy (btw, which came out 3 weeks earlier than the north american dvd release) somewhere in downtown toronto.

i currently don't have a copy of this movie at home. i'll probably grab this "deluxe" dvd.

and also, there is a 2 disc superbit edition of "Spiderman" in Korea. the 2nd disc is basically the same 2nd disc in the initial release of Spiderman.

There are Superbit Deluxes, but Sony's rereleases of Men In Black, Stuart Little and Black Hawk Down are all called "Deluxe Editions."

Ever heard of sarcasm? I can assure you it's way better than this "response".

Was there any extra material shot and excised from the original release? I don't remember any deleted scenes, nor where any would fit (though I would have liked further development of the discovery of his powers, that felt to rushed.)

I'd double dip only if there were an extended version of the film, and some more informative documentaries both on the growth of the character and the special effects. What was there was alright, but wasn't GOOD by any stretch. Up the ante to dts sound (yes, I'm in that camp) and a better transfer (if possible, let's try for it) and I'm in.

They shot some stuff with webshooters that were supposed to help his aim.

I was underwhelmed by the transfer on the existing release... dusty, and oversaturated.

If they re-did the transfer, I'd consider a double-dip, but I don't need any more extras than already exist.

Thanks, Scott, I was wondering if anyone else would bring that up. The original release of SM was the biggest disappointment in quality terms for a major motion picture for 2002. I thought the original version tried to cram too much content on the movie disc. I see lots of pixellation efx on solid backgrounds - things that were absolutely not on the prints I saw in theatre. So, I'd go for a 2nd DVD with a higher image bitrate & DTS. New features are absolutely not a buying factor for me - I get movies for a quality presentation first, the rest is optional.

Also, at the risk of being flamed, I never quite understand all the grousing about a new version of a film coming out. Capitalism is the simplest thing in the world - if a product is worth x dollars to you, then go get it. If it's not, then walk away and be done with it, but this incessant whining is really idiotic. Look, each time Artisan puts out T2, I say I really don't need to buy it again. Now I've bought the movie 3 times on DVD, and you know what, the quality upgrade was worth it to me each time. (Of course, 3 DVDs is probably less money than 1 laserdisc!)

Someone already brought up the trailer, but I wouldn't mind if there was no double dip warranted on the re-release, and they instead put the Twin Towers Spider-man Trailer as a easter egg or something on Spider-Man 2 Dvd.

Likewise, I have it as well, but I REALLY would like to have it on some sort of Spider-Man release so that I don't have to have it by itself just for the trailer...

I've got that DVD magazine as well. I e-mailed the editor, and he informed me that the teaser trailer was never intended for inclusion on the disc to begin with. He assumed that it was going to be the full theatrical trailer that is on the current Spider-Man DVD, but upon review of the disc for sound and picture checking he discovered that it was, in fact, the teaser trailer. By then, it was too late to recall the disc, as it had already gone into pressing for distribution and release to the stores, and he felt bad about the product seeming like an attempt to capitalize on 9/11.

As far as the historical context of that teaser trailer is in relation to U.S. history, there is sufficient argument to merit its inclusion in a future Spider-Man DVD release. I mean, if the filmmakers can include that quick shot of the close-up of the WTC in Spider-Man's eyes in the final film, that's solid argument right there to warrant the teaser trailer's inclusion in the DVD. Yet there would be some people who would also say, "Leave it off, it brings back too many bad memories."

But the irony is, it's become like "Where's Waldo?", trying to spot it in every New York City-based film over the last 30 years, from the Superman films to When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, the first X-Men, and of course Spider-Man, to name a few. Even on TV series such as Friends and The Nanny, that's what the eye gravitates to, and it brings back everything into perspective.

If they choose to include the teaser trailer in a future release, that's certainly something I wouldn't argue against but I'd be leery in wanting to watch again.

If this release were indeed a 'new cut' or 'extended edition'...

If there are a few newly-produced featurettes...

If that Maguire commentary were included...

If the (now-legendary and well-admired) WTC trailer were also included...

I'd probably be willing to double-dip this one, as I really liked the movie a lot.

And I agree with those who take mild exception with that quote. Deciding at the last minute to re-release an (already rather stacked) DVD to cash in on what's sure to be a blockbuster sequel is NOT in any way, shape or form similar to what New Line has done with their LOTR releases.

Matter of fact, they're kinda opposites. If the goal was to favorably compare Columbia's marketing plan to New Line's a better quote may have been:

I mean, people must know there's a difference between The Two Towers: Extended Edition and the Men in Black 2: "Sequel Tie-In Re-issue". Right?
