After reinstalling this weekend and sundry slowdowns from Time machine, I'm ready for usb3. It seems light peak is a bust, as a consumer technology. And usb2 is just too slow in the era of terabyte drives. Apple is failing to serve its customers by holding out so long.

It makes me a bit leery. New hardware + new OS = unexpected surprises. Granted I rather be in that situation with Apple than Wintel box but still, I rather not be in it all. I doubt it will prevent me from ordering one as soon as possible though. Although, SSD only would put the breaks on it.

Fingers crossed for no optical, SSD + HD combination.

You -MIGHT- get an SSD -OR- HD option but I think there is next to zero chance of getting a machine with both HD -and- SSD direct from Apple.

I don't know what the chances are of a traditional HD option if the rumors regarding the overall reduction in laptop thickness. I've got a 2010 MBP and have changed the hard drive in it, and there's just not much wiggle room in there. If they've reduced the thickness by more than a mm I don't know if a traditional laptop HD can fit in there.

More reason to suspect there won't be a 17" to start: There are already hidpi OEM panels available in 13 and 15, but not 17.

Depending on whether the next Macbook Pros are going to still
have Hard Drive option or SSD will be forced upon us....

I will be asking for advice on purchasing an SSD drive.

I am not certain I am going to want to pay the exorbitant
prices that Apple has been tacking on SSD drives.

With prices down to nearly $1 per GB, I don't think I
am going to be willing to pay more than $550 for a
512GB SSD drive. And I say that not really knowing
just how low the prices have come down as of late.

So, hopefully in the next few months you guys can
give some advice on what the best SSD drive to buy
is.

Seriously tho, with the TRIM firmware and stuff that Apple uses that they have better access to than anyone you are getting a worse solution by buying 3rd party. You can do it but its a big hassle that you don't want with a high performance item.

Also, keep in mind that if they really are slimming down the MBP they are probably going to do so by going to the small form factor slots like the air has, not a typical notbook drive form factor like a hard disk has. Those CAN be user serviced but again it is a tremendous hassle and is not worth it to save a few dollars.

Really, Sam?
That goes against everything that is being discussed elsewhere.

Apple is charging an amazing surcharge for their SSD drives.

From everything I have been reading elsewhere, Macbook buyers
are saving lots of money purchasing drives from Amazon from
manufactures like Crucial.

I don't know anything about TRIM firmware or otherwise, but you
really feel that there is justification for paying the inflated prices
that Apple charges rather than installing a 3rd party drive yourself?

Just looking for more detailed clarification on this rather than
simply challenging your answer.

They are expensive because they are generally worth it.
Apple is getting the smallest fastest drives before anyone else is, at least in the Airs.

OWC is the ONLY place you should consider if you are going to buy from someone other than Apple IMO. Again others may disagree, but thats my position.

Do SSD drives have a shelf life equal to or exceeding
a standard hard drive?
I thought I read somewhere that SSD drives eventually
break down with continues writes/rewrites to them.
