After beginning my Massive All-New "Movies We Want on DVD" Poll I immediately came across the sticky situation of movies that ARE on DVD - but not really.

Help me to fill in this scorecard by mentioning movies that are currently on DVD but only in FF / P&S. I'll aim to keep it updated when new mangled travesties are announced and hopefully omit a few titles if and when appropriate transfers are released. (I mean really: How the HELL can The Sting not be available in OAR????)

Please include correct studio and release year if possible.

Might want to do a search, I believe there is a thread covering this in the Software section. Might save a lot of work.

Indeed... I think there's one for unreleased films, too. I know for sure there used to be a massive "unreleased on DVD" thread over at DVDTalk.

Stuart Little HAS been released in widescreen, and a fantastic disc all-around. Unfortunately, the Collector's Series discs are out-of-print, having been replaced by the foolscreen Deluxe Edition. Still, I don't think it qualifies for the list.

I was unable to locate a current thread at either website - both for Pan N Scan Only or As Yet Unreleased on DVD. If anyone can track these threads down, please feel free to link me!

Off to add Walt's and Luke's picks.

Any titles not in the proper ratios are like that not because the studios hate the movies and deliberately wanted to botch the DVDs...

But rather due to budget and demand problems. In 1997, who would have thought a well-done DVD of The Sting would be worthwhile? Now, all the studios know that DVDs will make money...even catalog titles.

Also, nearly every non-OAR DVD is of a flat ratio film meant for 1.66:1 through 1.85:1. Of course, a few such as The Scarlett Letter and Natty Gann are 2.35:1 scope films...but that's a small minority.

As for the biggest shame...it has to be MGM's P&S-only DVD of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It's awful that a Super Panavision film can't be seen on DVD in the scope ratio. There was NO excuse for not having a dual-sided DVD. Warner has ALWAYS had widescreen transfers on DVDs for ANY scope film. Even titles like Blazing Saddles and Dirty Harry had dual sides.

IMO, the best thing to do with some of these titles is to release a bare-bones widescreen disc when needed. Some titles like the Vacation movies or The Absent Minded Professor could have a nice 1-disc special edition. Don't waste time on 2001: A Space Travesty...a low demand, low quality movie is probably never going to get a new DVD.

OK, thanks Brett. I had a suspicion that there was another thread afoot. My Searching skills are waning in my old age.

I'll point you all to that thread:

Comprehensive NON-OAR DVD list

The only thing I like better about my list is that its categorized by studio. This way we can keep score on who's screwing us most often. Information like that is important... ;)
