hey this might be a very naive question, but im just wondering why dont all new dvds come with DTS sound encoding? i mean is this solely a thing confined to Region 2 dvds? is there any benefit for the manufacturers for not encoding the dvds with dts?

also is there any specific way of searching for dts encoding on dvds? or are there any online lists which show which recent dvds come with dts?

cheers lads

Hehe, you're going to find this is a very common question around here, though still a vaild one. It's a question you're going to get varied answers to frankly. Many DTS tracks on DVD are struck from alternate (often superior) source material to that of its Dolby DVD counterpart. A good example of this practice is Saving Pvt Ryan, and when this happens it really abandons all good reason to compare the DTS to the Dolby. The whole argument for and against grows deeper of course.
The best suggestion? Listen for yourself, it's a beauty we are often given the choice of both tracks on DVD these days...

As far as the question about why not all DVDs sport DTS tracks goes, the remaining studios not doing it probably just dont see it as having a wide enough userbase to warrant the extra costs involved in putting DTS on their releases.
Dan's right, and there's another big factor: space. For all their capacity, a DVD still contains a finite amount of space. Include a DTS track, and you have to take bits away from something else. So choices have to be made, and sometimes the choice is not to include DTS. This is especially likely to the result if the space is needed to maintain video quality. There are a few well-documented cases of releases where a DVD's producers elected not to include DTS because to do so would have compromised the film's visual presentation.
