I had never tried a blind buy before so I thought I'd give it a shot. It didn't work out to well.

I waited until I got into the store to put the blindfold on. Damn, it was hard enough just trying to find my way to the electronics department. I can't count how many displays I knocked over trying to find my way back to the DVDs.

I think I would have made it too, but some lady kicked me in the crotch while I was feeling my way down an isle. How was I supposed to know those weren't melons I was grabbing on to? I thought I was in the produce section.

Needless to say, I don't think I'll be making any blind buys anytime soon. I don't know how you guys do it. I'll just stick to buying DVDs the old fashioned way.

I've had many "blind buys" (w/1500 some titles now) and a large "chunk" not yet viewed ...but one of them of note was Bound that proved to me that there was a spontaneity to this obsession with becoming a collector. The title is not anamorphically enhanced and only offers DD 2.0 (although, I think the box said 5.1, because they didn't know what was going on, I guess) and for that reason, stands out. It was a Special Edition because it provided a commentary (back in the days where "chapter selection" was sometimes listed as an "extra"). Along with my growing interest in DVD and HT, it went hand-in-hand with the burgeoning internet, where I had read of some interest in this somewhat obscure title in the much limited days of 1997.

Let's bring this back to life!
I love buying blind. I love checking reviews and synopsis of films I may like.

The best recent blind buy is a movie I've been wanting to see for a long time:
Shaolin Soccer. This movie was such a blast, comic and touching and just unlike anything you get in America, I recommend it to anyone who can get their hands on a copy!

Another blind buy that is also a lot of fun:
The Twins Effect, it will be getting a US release ina few months under thetitle The Vampire Effect. This was a lot of fun and one of Hong Kong's biggest hits last year. It's a Horror, Comedy, Action hybrid with one of the coolest cinematic weapons I've seen.

ok...here's my list...a number of these remained unwatched, some are 1's that I've enjoyed a lot, others not so much, but I don't regret any of them.

24: Seasons 1 and 2
Adventures of Indiana Jones
Alien Quadrilogy
American Pie (I also bought Pie 2 and Wedding but I don't count them because I had some idea what they'd be like based on the previous instalments)
Antz
Atlantis
Back to the Future Trilogy
Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns
Beverly Hills Ninja
Big Mommas House
Braveheart
A Bug's Life
Bull Durham
Caddyshack
Charlie's Angels
Chasing Amy
Citizen Kane
Clerks
Clerks: Uncensored
Crocodile Hunter: Colision Coarse
Daredevil
Dogma
E.t.
Eight Crazy Nights
Eight Men Out
An Evening with Kevin Smith
An Extremely Goofy Movie
Freaky Friday
Freddy Vs. Jason
Galaxy Quest
Godfather Movie Collection
A Goofy Moovie
Greatest Moments in Superbowl History (also the first DVD I ever bought)
Groundhog Day
Halloween
Hoosiers
Its a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie
Jackass the Movie
King of Queens: the Complete First Season
Kissing Jessica Stein
Ladies Man
Left Behind
Left Behind 2
Lilo and Stitch
The Lion King
LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring Extended
LOTR: Two Towers Extended
M*A*S*H: 5 star Collection
Mallrats
Meet the Parents
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Monty Python's the Meaning of Life
Powerpuff Girls: The Movie
R2D2 Beneath the Dome
Ready to Rumble
Remember the Titans
The Replacements
Rites of Autumn
Robbin Williams: Live on Broadway
Rocky: Gift Set
The Rookie
Saving Private Ryan
Scooby-Doo: The Movie
Sex and the City: Seasons 1 (enjoyed the show after this and bought seasons 2-4)
Shrek
Sinbad: Legend of the 7 Seas
Spiderman
Stitch: The Movie
13 Days
Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cudicle
Treasure Planet
Ultimate Vacation Collection

My explanation for why I buy so many blind goes simply like this:
1. I tend to avoid the theater at all cost.
2. I have bought things blindly for the following reasons:
A. I read reviews that got me interested in the story of the film.
B. I found it for a good price (cheap)
C. Figuring that it was like something already in my collection

As for my success rate, well I've still got a number of those to watch, but I've got a few in each catagory.

I really liked: Baseball, Lion King, Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet Shrek, Remember the Titans, King of Queens, A Goofy Movie, Caddyshack, Back to the Future, all those Kevin Smith films (a friend showed me Jay and Silent Bob and I was hooked)
I really didn't care much for: What Women Want, Ready to Rumble!!! A Bug's Life, and Charlie's Angels.

Vanishing Point
just got done watching it.
not bad. i still prefer Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry which is a film that used to play along with it on double bills and which it shares a few similarities too (and is also a Fox title).
i'll keep it around for another viewing somewhere down the road.

a great recent Blind Buy was
Bend Of The River a thoroughly entertaining Jimmy Stewart western.

i also recently rewatched another previous blind buy
The Day The Earth Caught Fire and absolutely loved it.
even better the second time.

Tried to order a copy of this through DDDHouse recently but for some reason it doesn't look like my order was taken. I guess I'll have to try again soon.

Most of the blind buys I get these days are Asian films, since they're either too radioactive to be distributed in the US and/or because Miramax likes to go around suppressing them. Other than that, I don't get blind buys very often anymore, thanks to Netflix.

Best blind buy I've gotten yet is Battle Royale. That movie gets better every time I see it and it's also gone over hugely well with everyone I've loaned it out to :)

Hero was very good. I'm really glad I ordered that one, although I do wish we could get that director's cut someday.

I got Infernal Affairs recently but haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing yet. Something always comes up when I'm getting into it, but what I've seen so far has been cool.

Worst blind buy for me is probably a tie between Captain Kronos and A Better Tomorrow II. I simply didn't like either movie very much, although ABTII had some fun scenes in it.

isn't going out to the movies a Blind Buy?
*Scratches head*

Never thought about it like that.

Some "blind buys" I've purchased include:

Gangs of New York
Panic Room
Count of Monte Cristo
The Four Feathers
Road to Perdition

I generally buy blind if I like the main actor(s). I read reviews here on HTF, but don't rely on them. Overall they have been so-so with the exception of Monte Cristo. That movie is great in my opinion.

I rarely make blind purchases. If I can rent it I will. But I recently bought The Eye used for $9.99. Overrated in my opinion. Then I got pissed off when I discovered the original opening wasn't on the R1 DVD.

One can argue that that's about what you'd pay seeing it in the theatre, but the difference, for me at least, is that it takes up shelf space. :)

I just viewed a wonderful blind buy and had to resurrect this thread!

Bartleby starring Crispin Glover. Picked it up used from Blockbuster. I say Glover on the cover (;)) read the description and thought it looked kind of cool. The case had a blurb describing it as a combination of Office Space(:emoji_thumbsup:) and Being There (don't know this one). SO I bought it and watched it this evening. What a great, funny, weird little movie, if someone asked me to give this disk up I'd have to reply "I'd prefer not to." :D
Anywoy the basic idea is a guy gets a job and at first he's really good worker, but soon, he just doesn't want to work. In a weird way it is a touching movie... Highly Recommended!

Hmmm, blind buys. Never got too many of those, but let's see how far I get.

Great blind buys:
-Cowboy Bebop (bought the first DVD blind, got the rest recently)
-Beast Cops: Collector's Edition
-Beyond The Mat: Director's Cut
-The Way of The Gun: Special Edition
-Love Actually

Blind buys I probably wouldn't buy again:
-Zero Effect
-Underworld
-Stargate SG-1 Season 1 Box Set
-Soldier

Blind buys I definately wouldn't have bought had I seen them before:
-Wild Wild West: Special Edition
-Lost In Space: Platinum Edition
-Joe's Appartment (I actually like this movie, but blinded by the low price, I forgot to check the aspect ratio. Take one guess...)
