I'm wondering who owns the rights, if they're BD or HD, and if there's any chance of a release this year.

Disney in the U.S. Haven't heard anything about this one but I would love to see it on blu-ray.

Well, I've been eye-balling the SD-DVD at Walmart for $7.50 and trying to decide whether to wait for a hi-def release or just get the SD. I still have about 350 VHS tapes to replace and this movie is one of them.

I remember this being listed this time last year as coming in the summer (07). That obviously never happened.
Disney didn't release much of anything catalog-wise (outside of Pirates and Cars) last year. It's looking a bit better this year with Crimson Tide, The Rock, Unbreakable and Narnia but they have a lot of non-animated films I'm dying to get on BD.
Open Range
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill 1 and 2
Sin City
Tombstone
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
Jackie Brown
Hero
The Sixth Sense
Signs

For $7.50, I'd pick up the SD dvd and not worry about it.

The SD DVD has an excellent thunderous DTS soundtrack and the picture quality was excellent.

Plus it is a hell of a good film.

As said above, go ahead and pull the trigger. It's a fine-looking (and great-sounding) disc of a fine film, with some decent supplemental material as well. That's not much more than the price of a rental, and should tide you over nicely.

There are several threads running that mention Open Range. Had
forgotten the last one that I participated in. This one seemed as good
as any to continue with.

Just received my copy of Open Range on Blu-ray. It's the German
release (coded for region 2) bought from their Amazon site. It took
just over two weeks to receive here in the U.S.

It's great to finally have a copy of this on Blu-ray. Watching it for the
first time in almost a decade, I am reminded as to what an exceptional
film this is. Certainly one of my favorite westerns.

Real shame to be reminded that this was one of the last films that actor
Michael Jeter (The Green Mile) appeared in before dying of cancer. He
was a cherished character actor.

The transfer looks quite pleasing.

I was initially confused by the indication/selection of a 6.1 track. I had
no idea what that meant. Did not take long to realize that it was pushing
mono to the back channels instead of stereo.

That being said, I was floored by the audio mix. Those rear channels
really got an earful, particularly for carrying the sound of heavy rain or
crowds from within a saloon. Very pleased with the surround activity.

With the state of catalog releases these days (the lack of to be exact),
I am less optimistic we will ever see a U.S. Blu-ray release. If you have
a region-free player, it's a no-brainer to import this film.

Ron, in between the introductions of 5.1 and 7.1 there was Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES. Each of these formats offered a center back channel.

Thanks for the review, Ron! If I had a region-free player, I'd jump on it. But I'm holding out hope that 'Open Range' will eventually receive a region 1 release. In the meantime, I'll be renting the HD version from iTunes to get my 'Open Range' fix!
