Finally! One of my favorite films of the 80's is finally coming to dvd as a 2 disc set on 6-10-03. It looks like the wait was worth it. I sold my LD last year upon hearing the rumors and I'm really looking forward to this remastered print in glorious 5.1 sound.
The retrospective documentary runs 20 minutes - I was expecting something more comprehensive, but as long as it is quality piece, then I won't mind.
Just thinking about Schickel commentating on this one; why Schickel? Am I the only one who found his commentary on UNFORGIVEN: SE a tad uninvolving and frequently dull(ish)? And this time, it is an almost-4-hour film! But it may just prove to be a highly informative 4-hour commentary.
I can't wait to read review of the upcoming Warner 2-Disc Special Editions and then enjoy them myself!
Let the good times roll...

What cut/version is this going to be anyway?
The various versions are listed HERE.
Will it be totally uncut in all regions?
Why did Warner not 'restore' the film to 250 minutes?
Why are those excised scenes not included in the special features?
Not that I'm bothered by this; I'm totally over the Moon about this film even being on DVD finally!
Just wondering about which exact version we all will be getting.

If that doco only runs 20 minutes, it's cut - that is, it's cut if it's the same as the identically titled doco SERGIO LEONE-ONCE UPON A TIME that screened on UK and Australian TV last year. The full version of the latter documentary runs something like an hour. (It screened as part of the same series that featured shows on John Carpenter, and Italian horror specialists Mario Bava and Dario Argento). The Leone doco was a good one - biographer Christopher Frayling gave a mesmerising description of Leone's plans for his never-started Russian epic, there's a funny car commercial Leone filmed in the 70's, a 'smoking gun' is revealed by the filmmakers that cleverly put to rest the controversy regarding Leone's birthdate, and more. If this is the same doco on the DVD (it has the same title) I'll definitely regret the good stuff that was lost to get it down to 20 minutes. If it's a new retrospective doco just focusing on AMERICA, that's cool, but it looks to me like it could be the Leone doco from the above series, only cut by two thirds. That'll be a shame.
Maybe (that would be cool) but I've read that Paramount are prepping some new, original commentaries and docos for that one. (Alex Cox confirmed this a couple of months back). Maybe it'll be on the expanded DUCK YOU SUCKER from MGM next year...
