Metallica has announced that the album will be called 72 Seasons, due in April of next year. They did release a new song a couple of days ago- Lux Eterna (it’s not spelled exactly this way- the E is a weird symbol). The song is upbeat speed metal- one of the shortest songs in their catalog.

It is pretty good. But never will they recapture the greatness of Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets.

And Justice For All was pretty great too.

Lightning and Puppets are amazing. When they do Creeping Death live, it’s thrilling (a big audience participation number).
A song I love on Puppets is Disposable Heroes- a music assault.

There were a few kick ass songs on their last album Hardwired. Atlas, Rise! and Halo On Fire are standouts.

What’s really interesting about this world tour is that there are going to be completely different sets and opening acts in the cities that they’re doing 2 shows. So, if you’re a big Metallica fan, you sort of have to book both shows (I couldn’t imagine being completely satisfied with a show if they didn’t play Creeping Death, or One).

Thank you, Alex for the link to the song Screaming Suicide. I like the song more than Lux Aeterna. Has a similar tempo to Atlas, Rise!

Metallica appears on a recent Rolling Stone list- fifty horrible albums by otherwise brilliant artists. St. Anger is at
#43. Eddie Trunk says their collaboration with Lou Reed (Lulu) is a far worse album. Wow. I have never heard Lulu, but I trust Eddie’s take (I think St. Anger is horrible-
the band members were fighting, James was going through rehab at around that time, and the band tried to go artsy with the sound, and it turned out to be a disaster).

SiriusXM has brought back the Mandatory Metallica channel, due to the release of the album next week. I assume they’ll play the album in its entirety, along with full length concerts, and of course all the music we love. Will be listening to this pretty much non-stop.

Today is when the whole album is getting revealed on Mandatory Metallica- its release day. They’re not playing the whole album at one time- they’re mixing in a song between their other stuff. So far I have heard half of the album- Lux Eterna,
Screaming Suicide, If Darkness Had A Son, 72 Seasons, Chasing Light, and You Must Burn. So far, I give it a rating of decent/good.

I'd recommend tracking down the original CD of St Anger - it came with a bonus CD of the band (with Robert Trujillo and not Bob Rock playing bass) doing live in-studio versions of the songs. It just sounds better in some ways. It's still not GREAT, but it's not horrible.

I know that there are a lot of fans who say nothing will ever compare to MoP or RtL and they're absolutely right - but Metallica puts out solid music for the most part. (Let's ignore Lulu for the sake of sanity). Even Load and ReLoad have some good songs on there.

I don't need a band to put out the same album over and over again.

Saying that - 72 Seasons hasn't grabbed me yet - but I haven't been able to give it a good listen either, it's mostly just been on at work while I work, so while I hear it, I haven't listened to it yet.

Yes I have listened to the album through the SiriusXM channel, and my first impression is that the songs are similar- one song can blur into another, or be confused with another.

Back before I became old, whenever I bought a new CD, the first thing I would do is play it while reading through the liner notes / lyric booklet a few times. In some ways I had a better connection to music back then. Somehow I lost that and don't do that anymore. Now that most music is sold digitally, there are rarely liner notes / lyric booklets to read through.

After listening to the album’s songs a few times, I think my favorite song is Shadows Follow. My opinion is nothing on this album is quite as good as Atlas, Rise!,
or Moth Into Flame from their previous album.

The Metallica channel played something funny this morning- they did a live version of the song Ride The Lightning. Before it began, James told the crowd “we haven’t played this one in a while”. It definitely sounded this way- Kirk’s guitar didn’t hit all the right notes in the solos, and after the speed metal in the middle of the song, James started singing lyrics that didn’t belong, so he sings “I forgot the fucking
words”. Of course he’s no virtuoso as a singer, but his voice works with the music, and he sings the stuff consistent with the recordings, and he is a good front man-
encouraging the fans to have fun.

The Mandatory Metallica channel is winding down (I think today is the last day for it). Sure going out on a high note
(excuse the pun)- early this morning, they played a full concert, from 2006 in Berlin.
The band played Master Of Puppets, in its entirety, in track order- celebrating 20 years of the album’s release. Great stuff- I’ll have to go to their website to see if this is available on CD.

A while back there was a Metallica channel devoted to something (probably the Black album anniversary) on Sirius. I was dumbfounded, and shocked as they played the entire concert from my small town in 1991 (Black album release tour). The only Metallica concert I ever went to. I didn't even know recordings existed for that.

You are correct- the channel was on the air last, in September 2021, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Black Album.

Hooray! Their website had the Berlin concert on 2 CDs, so I ordered that, and 2 other shows.

The concert they played this afternoon was every bit as interesting- March 1985, Los Angeles. Sound was very low quality, but you got the idea. Ride The Lightning was their latest album, so they played a lot of that, stuff from Kill ‘Em All, and they did the Diamondhead song Am I Evil?
James was a screaming lunatic, trying to get everyone fired up.
