Lean (as movies I prefer The Maltese Falcon, but I would have to say Lawrence was the greater directorial effort)

I disagree. Altman has been a very erratic Director throughout his career but M*A*S*H is one of his most accessible films (which I don't think is a bad thing).I agree that Altman is nothing if not erratic. But for me, while Wise has made some fine films, such as West Side Story and The Day the Earth Stood Still, he has made nothing of the caliber of McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville or, Short Cuts.
I also think that Altman has tended to take far more chances with his films (e.g. Popeye, The Player and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson) than did Wise, which is also no bad thing.
I’d agree that M*A*S*H is a very accessible film, but then so is McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I just don’t think that it is one of his best. On the other hand, I have a very high regard for West Side Story, although I wish that the casting had been actors who could all sing. Plus it is also very accessible—no bad thing, as you observe.
