JOHN HUSTON - (The Maltese Falcon) - I might give LOA cinematography, but certainly not direction.

FRITZ LANG - (M) - but very, very tough

STANLEY KUBRICK - (2001: A Space Odyssey) - easy, easy, easy

DAVID LEAN - (Lawrence of Arabia) Although I like The Maltese Falcon better overall, you gotta give Lean the props for his remarkable efforts on LOA.

FRITZ LANG - (M) Nothing for PJ at the Oscars; nothing for PJ here...nice effort, but nothing amazing.

Robert Wise—(West Side Story) Altman is by far the better director, but, for me M*A*S*H is one of his weaker efforts.

Billy Wilder

Luis Buñuel

Orson Welles

I disagree. Altman has been a very erratic Director throughout his career but M*A*S*H is one of his most accessible films (which I don't think is a bad thing).

ROBERT ALTMAN - (M*A*S*H)

BILLY WILDER - (Double Indemnity)

JAMES WHALE - (Bride of Frankenstein)
The humor injected into this film is just as scathing as the Bunuel film.

FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA - (Apocalypse Now) The Directorial efforts of Coppola on this film surpass Welles studio battles with CK.

I agree that Altman is nothing if not erratic. But for me, while Wise has made some fine films, such as West Side Story and The Day the Earth Stood Still, he has made nothing of the caliber of McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Nashville or, Short Cuts.

I also think that Altman has tended to take far more chances with his films (e.g. Popeye, The Player and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson) than did Wise, which is also no bad thing.

I’d agree that M*A*S*H is a very accessible film, but then so is McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I just don’t think that it is one of his best. On the other hand, I have a very high regard for West Side Story, although I wish that the casting had been actors who could all sing. Plus it is also very accessible—no bad thing, as you observe.

Not too surprising around here, but very, very disappointing nevertheless.

ROBERT WISE - (West Side Story) - very tough

BILLY WILDER - (Double Indemnity) - even tougher

JAMES WHALE - (Bride of Frankenstein)

ORSON WELLES - (Citizen Kane) - with the Godfather films, it would have been different.
