Greatest Director's & their Greatest Films - The Tournament

Every year I seem to do a Director Tournament but this time I want to try something a little different.

RULES {Revised}
First step will be to nominate the participating Directors.

Theatrical feature length films only - sorry. I know certain directors have made great mini-series, pilots, made-for TV movies, student films, music videos, etc. I want to concentrate only on theatrical releases otherwise this'll get way too muddled.

I'll post up a Directors Filmography and you'll choose from 1 to 4 films maximum per Director. Choose the film or films that you'd want to represent that Director in the Tournament.

The single film with the most votes will be the representative film for that Director.

The last part of the tournament will have the Directors and their 1 film going head to head against each other.

You'll be voting for the better film as well as the better Director (that film only).

MASTER LIST

FEDERICO FELLINI - (8 1/2)
STANLEY KUBRICK - (2001: A Space Odyssey)
AKIRA KUROSAWA - (Seven Samurai)
ORSON WELLES - (Citizen Kane)

Well, I'll nominate some of the obvious choices:

Stanley Kubrick
Alfred Hitchcock
Akira Kurosawa
Ingmar Bergman

I've only seen 4 Bergman films so far, but I absolutely love them and am going to try to see a lot more.

Anyone wanna bet this comes down to 2001 vs. either Seven Samurai or Rear Window?

Hmmm, I just re-read the rules. I guess that means my Bergman nomination doesn't count? Can I second or third if someone else nominates?

I've got your back Chuck

Nominate
Ingmar Bergman
Werner Herzog
Eric Rohmer

Third
David Lynch
Kurosawa
Scorsese

Second
Godard
Fellini

8 films is tough, I can't nominate Fassbinder, Murnau, Bunuel, Preston Sturges, Eisenstein, Ozu, or any of the more recent world directors.

Now I'm getting paranoid and checking my other noms...

Kubrick - 10
Hitchcock - 26
Kurosawa - 12

Allen - 24
Lynch - 5
Scorsese - 9
Coen - 7 (but I own Man Who Wasn't There and can try to watch it this weekend)

Do I have to withdraw my second for Lynch and third for Coen?

I didn't think you had to have seen 8 for the purposes of 2nd's and 3rd's, otherwise I'll have to withdraw my Godard 2nd and Lynch 3rd since I've only seen 7 from each.

I have not seen eight of most of the director’s that I’d like to nominate.(e.g. Dreyer, Wong, Antonioni and Buñeul). But I can help Chuck out.

Nominate:

Ingmar Bergman
Preston Sturges
Robert Altman
Frank Capra

Second Chuck's question as to seconds & thirds? Do we have to have seen eight in order to second/third?

Well I get one nomination back with Bergman. Brook got that while I was trying to decide if I’d seen eight by Sturges. (I have—so I’ve got your back, Brook).

8 films is tough, I can't nominate Fassbinder, Murnau, Bunuel, Preston Sturges, Eisenstein, Ozu, or any of the more recent world directors.
Yep, same problem. Oh well, everyone else is probably happy that I can’t put in Kiarostami and Wong Kar-Wai. :D

I nominate only two for now:
  • Andrei Tarkovsky - yes, yes, you may think he only made seven films... but you're obviously forgetting his student film "Steamroller and Violin", which I've also seen! (And another of his student films, "The Killer", will soon be out as a "special feature" on an upcoming Criterion DVD).
  • Luis Buñuel
