Hello Canadians!

I'm wondering if anybody else here took advantage of Future Shop's HD-DVD and Blu-ray 2 for 1 sale this Boxing Week?

I did! I grabbed a bunch of Blu-ray discs, including SWAT, Kingdom of Heaven, Lethal Weapon, M:I:III, Tomb Raider, Kung Fu Hustle, The Fugitive, X3: The Last Stand, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to add to the discs I already had.

One of my friends picked up over 24 HD-DVD discs and 10 Blu-ray discs during the week. When I went back to my local store the Blu-ray and HD-DVD sections were almost bare! This special was very well received.

Even though a lot of the discs included in the promo were selling at MSRP, this was still an incredible deal.

I bought myself 6 BD and 6 HD DVDs. The last day for the promotion is tomorrow. There were a couple of times when the price in their computers did not match the price listed on their website and one time when I later returned to have a disc price matched against Best Buy's online price.

I can't help but wonder if this sale is an indicator of the state of HD...I wwent to 3 Future Shops today..Chilliwack..Abby and Coquitlam (one of the biggets in the lower mainalnd). They had nada for selection in HD though lots of BD and all 3 said there was no comparison...HD was flyin out the door while BD sales were mediocre at best.

Wish there were futureshops here in the US :frowning: Sounds like a great deal! I think with HD-DVD selling more, there's a lot to be said for coming out earlier, having cheaper players, and having DVD in your name. I have PS3 I bought for Blu-Ray, but imagine I'll have an HD-DVD player before the end of the year.

You know, that's interesting. The HD-DVD stock at both the Victoria stores is typically quite good, though by all accounts they get much better replinishment. The BD selections are always much more depleted, although it would appear that this is largely because they simply have a smaller in-store catalogue than they do HD-DVD. But both are selling.

Probably the best tell-tale sign is that Talledega Nights sold out on Blu-ray at both stores, which is odd considering that this was a FREE title with the PS3, so what are these people buying their BD to play on? Something tells me that a lot of people are buying for a) their Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on b) their PS3 or c) stocking up for the purchase of a future player.

I went and got 5 BRs and 1 HD DVD during the sale. The prices on most of their items are crazy though. I wanted to get Monster House and they were charging $47CAD for it. Much cheaper through Amazon.com.

You should have price matched it against Best Buy's price of $34.99, Futureshop would have beaten it by 10% of the difference.

The odd thing is that Best Buy owns Future Shop, so one might expect their prices to be more in line with each other.

Here in Saskatoon, they recently cleared some DVD space for a dedicated HD section (both formats). Selection is pretty good, though prices do tend to be high. Previously, the HD discs were sent to a ghetto at the back of the store, and they had very little selection.

I'm not sure ho BB stays in business to be honest. Have checked their prices on DVDs and they are horrendous compared to FS. If its any indication of how they price the rest of their inventory...no wonder people like me never even go there anymore.

To BB's credit, they did have a much lower price on "Enemy of the State" BD than Futureshop. I initially paid $40.99 for the movie and then noticed the next day that BB finally listed it on their site for $29.99. Later that day I stood in line for 1.5hrs to get the movie price matched at FS.

Wasn't it Buy 2, get one free, as the flyer stated? So in other words, you paid for 2 and got the 3rd one free? I bought 4 and got 2 more free. Was it supposed to be buy 1 and get 1 free? EVen the in store signs said buy 2 and get the 3rd free... I'm confused?! So you bought 1 and got the second one for free?? Did I not get the proper deal? I've saved my reciepts so I might just go back and see.

Marc.

yes I got 6, paid for 4 and got 2 free. Made them do it on 2 separate bills to make it fair too.

I had 3 HD-DVD priced at 23.99 and three ranging from $28.99 to 32.99 and when they initially put them on one bill the system automatically gave me 2 of the $23.99 DVDs free.

So I said I need 2 bills. one for the 3 DVDs at $23.99 so I paid $48 and got one free. Another bill where I paid about $62 for 2 DVDs and got a $28.99 HD-DVD for free.

They try to get you any chance they get!

I noticed they have dramatically jacked up pricing too for this "deal"

Miami Vice went from $32.99 to $54.99 (!) - no thanks!

I bought 12 hd dvd's at the Future shop sale and got 4 more pre x-mas (guess I should have price matched those!) for a total of 16 new HD DVD's. And then they lost my luggage!

Hopefully the disks will get to me today so I can check out Superman tonight. Looking forward to my new acquisitions!

I was suprised by the diffferent titles available at different stores. I shopped both in Victoria and Vancouver and the selection was different at each store. Glad I shopped around a bit as I got the Donner cut of Superman II and Casino and Mutiny on the Bounty, which I did not see elsewhere.

I will say, I did not see anyone else shopping for HD DVD or Blu ray disks other than me...

Dave
