The Magician's never come out of hiding for a DVD release so far, that cult rarity would be very high on my CBS/VEI/Shout/from whomever want list. As well as: McGruder & Loud, The New Breed, One Step Beyond, Trackdown, Slatery's People, The Immortal, Serpico, Longstreet, Jake and the Fatman, The Marshal, Whirlybirds, Lancer and Nero Wolfe.

Hate to tell you, but I don't think any of those shows stand a snowball's chance in hell being released. I am 47 and have only seen episodes from 5 of the series you listed even though many of them aired during my prime TV watching years. Even if every one of those shows were put out, I doubt they'd sell 1000 copies combined.

The 2nd series on his list, Longstreet, was released in Region 2 several years ago. Maybe someday it will have a US/Region 1 release, but if one really wants the series, it's available.

The Magician and Duet/Open House are the 2 on his list I'd most like to see released someday, though I'd also be interested in a Region 1 Longstreet and Dear John as well.

I would like to see The Magician and Nero Wolfe released. The stars for these - Bill Bixby and William Conrad - make releases for these shows quite desirable. The chances - not good at this late point in the TV on DVD history timeline. Still - you never know.

Agreed. I like anything Bill Bixby is in; I wish we'd get Goodnight, Beantown on DVD.

The Magician would be a quick purchase for me.

And then there were all those shows that were, in my mind, similar to Murder, She Wrote that may be fun to have available. I'm thinking Black's Magic (Hal Linden and Harry Morgan, I think) and others along that line.

Duet / Open House would be a great addition as well.

I jusdt wish Shout! would secure the rights to Redd Foxx's series, SANFORD.

And I may be persuaded to give Brady Brides and most definately The Tortellis a GO!

I agree that most of these short runners have little chance of being released unfortunately,, I have always been surprised nothing was ever done with Dear John however. Long runner with a recognizable lead. Wonder why CBS never did anything with this.

I'd suspect the cancellation of Mr. Sunshine was probably a just cause, since institutions for the blind didn't really get a laugh out of the show's main character, Dr. Paul Stark (Jeffrey Tambor), who was depicted as a blind college professor confined to a wheelchair. I do hope it gets released anyway.

I'd be interested in the Immortal, Longstreet, The Magician, and possibly Nero Wolfe. The rest I don't really care one way or the other. Many are so obscure, that I have never heard of them.

I did catch an episode of Working Stiffs about 25 years ago on a cable channel. That was the first and only episode I ever saw.

I'd like to see them re-do The Odd Couple, and work the same kind of magic on music clearances that they did with WKRP. (Should be cheaper than WKRP was, since most of the music on OC was older standards, and most of it was performed by characters on the show rather than by the original artists.)

They'd sell way more than that, pretty sure. To be honest, Shout! I'm not so sure of anymore unfortunately, regarding classic TV but VEI seem to be on the right track with this new CBS deal...

I agree with you that there is little chance that much of any of this stuff is released which maybe the possible exception (although) unlikely of Magician and The Immortal. I'd love to see CBS release Dear John but for some reason, they really don't care about it. I'll settle for my alternate set which is decent quality.

I actually watched quite a few of the other short lived programs on this list first run and while there are some real "dogs" here (Blansky's Beauties, Makin It, New Odd Couple), there are a couple of real quality shows here that proabably should have lasted longer than they did, Namely Nero Wolfe and Best Of The West. I remember watching both of these weekly in 81 and really enjoying both programs. Of course I was 13, so my scale of "quality TV" assuredly wasn't what it is now. But I will tell you, I picked up a complete alternate set of Best Of The West last year and it really did hold up well. Funny show, good writing, and well acted. Haven't seen Nero Wolfe in years, but I'm guessing with Bill Conrad in the lead, it's probably not revisionist history to believe it actually was a quality program.

As I recall, Powers Of Matthew Star only big place in TV history came from the tragedy that happened on the set when Lou Gossett got burned badly filming a scene. Never watched that show though.

I hope they put out a bunch of these things in one fell swoop as I have a feeling they're going to lose their shirts on this deal. There's a reason CBS didn't put out these series or stalled them. They sold very poorly. Now VEI trying to make chicken salad out of you know what. I really want to be wrong on this but I fear after this deal, they won't be long for this world.

Is it possible that CBS is willing to make strictly percentage deals with licensees like VEI, so that VEI's initial outlay isn't too high? That seems like a way for CBS to make some small but easy money off their catalog titles without VEI risking financial ruin. Or does CBS insist on high licensing payments upfront, regardless of sales numbers?

I really do hope you are wrong Neil, cause if this turns out badly for VEI and pushes them out of the vintage business, all we will be left with is WA and sporadic releases from Shout....and at that point you can really put the final nail in the coffin of this hobby (the previous two being the Timeless aquisition and CBS pulling out of the vintage business).

....unless of course Mr Finn steps in and throws out the lifeline to rescue the hobby......LOL

Well, the DVD is itself a dying breed. . . so don't really count on this to last long anyway.

I have the same concerns - and yet - VEI has previous experience with Mod Squad and Diagnosis Murder. Surely they must understand what they are getting into with this latest CBS deal.

Really, really hope this works out and we see even more releases down the road.
