I have quite a few options to get a Gamecube on the 18th, as I live in the Greater Philadelphia area.... But am I out of luck because I didn't preorder? Will it be difficult to track one down even with the XBox release a few days earlier?
I'm not keen on camping out for a video game system, but I want this thing bad!

Tony,
You will be fine. I didn't pre-order one either (screw them bundles), and I know I'll have no problem finding one at midnight.

Don't worry. Nintendo will have a lot of units available at launch and even more in the coming weeks. Because of the PS2 fiasco, parents are waiting a while to get their kids consoles for X-Mas, so more will be available.

Okay, so parents that were burned because PS2s immediately sold out, are going to circumvent that problem this time by waiting LONGER to try and get one?

Be sure and stop by Best Buy at 4am and say hello to the giant line of soccer moms. They'll be picking up all the tickets you need to get a system the next morning.

People who NEED the console will buy the launch stock. After that, it will just be people walking in and picking them up. Nintendo is sending more and more each week, so there will always be a refreshed supply.

If the item is hot, you'll have a refreshed supply that gets scooped up by soccer moms during the day while you are stuck at work. A lot of people I know never got a PS2 before xmas last year despite many shipments to retail between launch and xmas.
You are stuck at work, at your desk. Once one soccer mom sees the new shipment, she calls up Buffy, and Ashley, and all the others...a big pyramid of phone calls develops and they scoop up SUVs full of the hot item in question while sipping latte and cappucino. You get off work and they are all gone.
Hell, it's funny but it is true.

The PS2 launched with only 500,000 units when they promised 1,000,000 thats why there was such a fiasco about it. Nintendo and Microsoft stated that they will have 1,000,000 units for there launches thats why they were delayed a couple of weeks. They wanted to be sure that they could meet the demand. I am sure there will be plenty of both systems to go around. They only problem is that they are launching at one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year so the first shipment is going to go quickly. Second shipment for the Gamecube is suppose to be on 12/3 I am not sure about the X-Box second shipment.

Joshua, according to a recent report in industry trade, Video Business, Nintendo is expecting to have 700,000 GameCubes available for launch and Microsoft is projecting around 300,000 Xboxes.
The BIG difference between this launch and last year's PS2 launch is that both companies will be able to refill the pipeline much quicker than Sony did. It took more than three months for Sony to fix its chip manufacturing problem before they got fully ramped up. This time around, there should be a fairly steady stream of both systems available after launch. Here's the link .
