Does anyone know why the 20th Century Blu-ray of Castaway is out of print?

Just as a note if anyone is having trouble locating a new copy, these seem to be plentiful at area Big Lots (Which I assume holds true nationwide) . I believe it's priced at $5.

As for an answer to the question, I don't have one. But hopefully going out of print is a good sign of this being revisited. Was a very good release for the time and remains adequate today, but as an early release on the format, there's plenty of room for improvement in 2020.

As one of the few modern movies I'm fond of (Many of the others also star Tom Hanks) and with the outdoor vistas in the film, a properly handled UHD release would be particularly nice in my opinion.

I've never been to Big Lots. It appears amazon is out of stock. It doesn't say "more are on the way" the way it usually does.

It’s a Fox movie. Fox Home Video doesn’t exist anymore. It’s probably a matter of existing stock being depleted, while Disney is still figuring out what to do with physical media rights they’ve inherited in a marketplace that doesn’t really value that product anymore.

That it’s selling for $6 at Best Buy or Big Lots already means that when Fox was up and running, that they made far more copies than they were able to sell, and had no choice but to slash prices to try to liquidate the remaining inventory. In other words, it didn’t sell enough to justify its original Blu-ray release, which probably creates an obstacle in choosing to reissue it again.
