Today, Pretty Baby. One of the most eclectic filmmakers to emerge in 20th Century French cinema, Louis Malle transcended his contemporaries in the French New Wave by delivering a style that was all his own. With films like Elevator to the Gallows (1958), The Lovers (also 1958), The Fire Within (1963), Lacombe, Lucien (1974) and Black Moon (1975), Malle’s directorial style made him difficult to pin down in any one particular genre; brought to America by Paramount Pictures head David V. Picker, Malle shocked everyone by tackling Pretty Baby for his debut here in the states. Previously released on DVD by Paramount and released on Region Free Blu-ray last year by Imprint, Kino has given the movie its U.S. Blu-ray debut.
