Hi - this is something that's been on my mind for a while, thinking it might be my winter project. My HT isn't too high-tech, samsung 32", Yamaha 7.1 but configured for 5.1 only, older model but I've got it working well with my older blu-ray using the 5.1 multi-channel option, SVS sub and fronts, and sub-par Yamaha center and surrounds my wife bought me for X-mas several years ago. The center and surrounds are what I'm looking to replace with some DIYs to learn better how speakers operate.

Thoughts on smaller sized DIY speaker kits for rear surrounds to start with?

Hi Mike,

Building speakers is pretty easy if you buy kits - so that's a great idea. I typically look at three sources for these kits:

1) Parts Express - Cheap and good sound for the money: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton...y-bookshelf-monitor-speaker-kit-pair--300-640
2) GR-Research - excellent sound quality, variety of options: http://gr-research.com/avserieskits.aspx or http://gr-research.com/nserieskits.aspx or http://gr-research.com/x-serieskits.aspx for more cost-effective options
3) DIY Sound Group - more construction required, but very affordable http://www.diysoundgroup.com/speaker-kits.html

This one is also very popular and on the smaller side, but currently out of stock.

Thanks for the replies, took a quick look at the links but will have to spend a bit more time reading them. I knew parts express was a popular site, good to hear you guys think they're worthwhile.
