Because sexuality in the human mind is an insane hodge-podge of desires, turn ons, turn offs, and unusual desires. Asking why someone prefers scantily clad women to pure p0rn is like asking someone why they like redheads better than blondes. They usually don't know why, but one is a bigger turn on than the other (or a different turn on.) Also, some people prefer flirting and romance more than just straight sex (ask any woman ), so there are different levels of excitement for different occasions.
Another way to look at it is a friend telling me how hot Julia Roberts is when she looks like a horse crossed with a hat rack to me. I prefer curvy, full figured ladies (like Jessica Biel or Marilyn Monroe.) But that doesn't make my friend wrong, it just means our preferences are different.
Same thing with DOA3 or a swimsuit issue. If we are in mixed company, I can pop DOA3 in and us guys can enjoy the game and some semi-nude babes. It's mild excitement, but the point is just to have fun - not necessarily a full blown sexual release. Whereas, if I was to pop in straight porn it would be fairly inappropriate and would definitely make the ladies uncomfortable at the least. You see, each has it's place and time, the point of titillation isn't always an orgasm.

To understand why, I imagine you'd need to dig into the messy inner workings of America's weird Puritan hangups about sex.

Just to clarify, contrary to popular belief, the Puritans were NOT at all responsible for America's lingering hang-ups about sex and sexuality. They realized that sexuality and desire were parts of human nature, and encouraged, even required, sex within marriages. Heck, one guy even got excommunicated for withholding from his wife for two years!!! So stop blaming it on Puritans, it's not their fault.

My "pure and wholesome" comments were somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
It's interesting that many hundreds of teenaged girls dress in even more skimpy outfits then the aforementioned pop stars. To some people, they are scanks. To me, they are just people following the latest fashion trends. Remember all the righteous indignation back in the 60's when women were experimenting with their new-found fashion freedoms?
Paradoxically, sexual expression and sexual display today is probably on par with the displays found in ancient hunter-gatherer societies. At least, scientists seem to think so.
The possibility that current Western mating "rituals" is a direct reflection of sexual behavior from prehistoric times is pretty neat. But, is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Interesting topic. Let me state first off that I can't stand porn, it's way too much, it's like watching two animals. To be perfectly honest, most of the sexual acts that are on line or in pornographic films I find to be disgusting rather than sexy. That sort of sexual activity should be done behind closed doors IMO. It's not the portrayal of the ACT of sex that appeals to me, it's simply the female body. However if that's what your into, more power to you.
Anyone that knows me here, knows that the female form is one of my biggest areas of interest, to me a woman's body is one of the best things about this planet! It really is a wonder of nature to behold. The way women are portrayed in MAXIM, STUFF and FHM is just more in line of that notion for me. It's not all out show-me-everything sexiness, it's more suggestive, and that to me is very sexy.
To quote Elain from Seinfeld...
"The female body is a work of art. The male body is utilitarian, it's for gettin around...it's like a jeep."
