One for the Ages

The packaging, and by that I mean the slipcover for Russell Macahy's 1986 fantasy adventure Highlander, is quite special.

While SteelBook aficionados may not be impressed, Lionsgate has gone the high road to make this something special.

First, it's the design of slipcovers that has rounded corners, which achieves a sort of homespun appearance.

The base of the imagery is fully reflective silver, upon which are layers of inks and dyes - some from the far east, others harvested by virgin nuns in the peaks of the Himalayas.

Overall are shades of blue, from a delicate light shade, to the deepest of navy blues with an incredible tonality.

At the very top of the obverse are embossed the words "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE," which one would presume has something to do with the story-line.

Below center are the names of the lead players - Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery --

And then the title of the film - HIGHLANDER - in all caps in its own special typeface, but the color is outstanding. Initially it seems to be an extremely bright yellow - again printed atop the silver iridescence that literally jumps off the packaging - also beautifully embossed. But upon closer examination, I'd reference the color to be more of a citrine.

Below, the director's name, and at the very bottom "DIRECTOR'S CUT."

If you're going to get on board, you'll want this very special first edition packaging.

Image - 5 (Dolby Vision)

Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors - Yes

Makes use of and works well in 4k - 2.5

Upgrade from Blu-ray - No

Given that just before he says "Upgrade from Blu-ray - No", he says "Makes use of and works well in 4k - 2.5", I'm'a guess that he means it's not an upgrade (or not much of one).
It's a low-budget affair, shot by a top DP, that never really shines. What I got was grain - a whole lot of grain - which tells me the film is not ripe for 4k. I'm unfamiliar with the French Blu, but the domestic was more than decent, if a bit uneven.

Point being a new image harvest released as a Blu-ray and not 4k would have been just as nice.

I'm not a fan of 4k for the sake of 4k.

Actually the packaging is very striking.
I just looked at an image of it. Yeah, I guess the cover can be described as "striking", though it doesn't work that well for me. The Best Buy SteelBook cover looks much better, in my opinion.

One is paying an extra $10. Very attractive.

Someone should start a business that just creates and sells Steelbooks.

Have to license the imagery, logos, etc.

No discs. Just the packaging.

All “limited editions.” $50 per example, with Certificate of Authenticity. In a protective case, housed in velvet.

Who’s in?

Ron? Robert?

Its a hideous film. I saw it in a theater about 15 years ago and it was ugly there too. No surprise the 4k is...what it is.

Best Buy sort of already did this. Several years ago (- Before Covid 19) I noticed they had some steelbooks that were priced if memory serves at about $5.00, I then discovered they were for Video Games. At that point I considered buying one strictly for the game. Then I notced a sticker that proclaimed something like: "This Limited Edition Steebook does not contain a game disc or code!" I put the steelbook back. About a month later I came back and most of them were still there.

Then you have nothing positive to add in this thread.;)

Now, now. Be nice. Since this thread is about a video presentation of the film, and not the film itself, my thoughts about the film aren't especially relevant. And I'm not commenting here to rain on any fan of the film's parade.

Is this movie okay for a blind buy? Price is rather low on Amazon right now.
It wouldn't make my list of favorite films, but I think it's entertaining. I ordered the UHD from Amazon at that low price, too. I wouldn't have paid $20+ for it, but at $12.50 including a digital copy I'll bite.

These review threads are more than just about the video presentation.
