27. Halloween II :star: :star: :star:

Excellent, better than I expected. I can't believe Carpenter referred to this movie as a "piece of shit"? Oh well.

28. The War Of The Worlds :star: :star: :star: :star:

Classic. Better than most every alien invasion movie ever made. Too bad that I hear Hollywood is planning on a remake. I thought they already did with Independence Day? The specials effects in WotW are remarkable, especially given the time they were made. They still hold up today, well, except for the shots with the visible wires :)

29. The Frighteners :star: :star: :star:

I hadn't really seen this movie since it's theatrical release in 1996. It's great; even better than I remembered it. Others have criticized Michael J. Fox's performance in this one... I just can't see it. I thought he did great. Very fun movie, and my favorite Peter Jackson movie...

So I need to watch two more tonight. I'm having trouble deciding which they should be. I've run out of rental movies from Netflix, and my actual "horror" part of my DVDs is somewhat lacking. I thought I had more than I do, seeing as how I thought I was a horror fan.

I've watched 4 so far today, and next up is my final entry, John Carpenter's The Thing. Great way to end things. I'll post my update after I finish.

I'll allow everyone some leeway for their last entries due to different time-zones. I'll make the cut-off 4:00am edt. Tomorrow night I'll post the recap.

Watched some more Hammer, including my favorite The Devil Rides Out, Ed Wood, a Carpenter double feature and then it all ends for me with House on Haunted Hill because I have a soft spot for William Castle.

The Hills Have Eyes - I actually considered skipping the rest of this around the half hour mark and moving on to something else. But I suppose that wouldn't be fair to those of you who've sat through the 0.5 stars stinkers. Also at least a few folks have praised this film, so I had to stick it out. I guess I never recovered from the boring beginning, but I can't say I really liked anything about this movie. OK, two things - Dee Wallace and that long pull out shot of the husband when he realizes

his wife is dead and his baby is gone.

I didn't care about these people, I never felt a palpable sense of tension or suspense and don't think there were any really good scares. I also thought it was a mistake to show us too much of the people in the hills. Too bad I end on a sour note, but after so many good films over the last month, I guess that's OK.

Well, that's a wrap! I'm quite happy overall with squeezing in just over one per night and making them all first time viewings. Managed to see some great films and mostly avoided too many crappy ones. Thanks to all the other contributors. Got some great ideas and had a load of fun. My faves of the bunch below are listed in purple.

Okay, I'm done. Here's my last update. It's hard to believe the month is already over. I'll post some sort of retrospective on the movies I saw sometime later.

May - Glad I got this in for the challenge, because I wasn't able to last year. A hell of a film. I've spoken about this one a lot, so there isn't that much new to say, but the direction was solid and Bettis was amazing. The story is interesting, but her acting makes it a much stronger film. Like Maniac, this works having the protagonist as a villain of sorts. You definitely root for May, even when she's doing horrible things. I cannot wait to see what comes next from Lucky McGee.

The Wicker Man - A classic that I saw for the first time in this challenge two years ago. Both Ed Woodward and Christopher Lee are superb in their roles. The film is very unsettling, like other religion-oriented films (The Omen and Rosemary's Baby come to mind). When I first saw the film, I thought some of the really weird stuff (Brit Eckland's nudie dance, etc) drew the film down...but the more I watch it, the more it works. The moments play out in a very Lynchian way; semi-dreamlike and very unsettling. The ending of this film is one of the best horror film moments ever. Period.

Frailty - Of all the horror films released in the last five years that I've rallied around, I believe this is the best. It's an interesting story, and it's done well, but it doesn't start gripping you until you've seen it a few times. Every time I've watched it, it sticks around in my mind for a few days. Credit Paxton's terrific direction for this. I've said it before, but I'm waiting with baited breath to see what he directs next. I sure hope it's horror. Great performances from Paxton, McConaughey, and new-comer Matt O'Leary.

Below - Popped up on a Netflix recommendation, so I thought I'd give it a try. Great atmosphere through-out. The story is a little light, but it's done well. Some of the time it feels like a standard submarine war movie (ala U-571), but the creepiness factor works its way into things about half-way through. There are a handful of very unsettling moments. Great stuff from Bruce Greenwood.

The Thing - I thought I'd go out with a winner. John Carpenter was able to get lightning to strike twice with this. Starting with Halloween and continuing with The Thing, Carpenter shows why he is the best horror director in the business (even if he hasn't directed anything good in 10 years). The atmosphere is solid, and the sense of paranoia is everywhere. Carpenter is able to take what could be a very complex concept (a lot of characters to juggle, complicated scientific stuff) and play it absolutely simple. Kudos for having one of the greatest endings in any horror film. A++

First time viewings in bold:

10/31 - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - 5/5
- Raw, brutal, primitive, and unrelenting. IMO, this is one of the most frightening movies ever made. Marilyn Burns gives one of the best acting performances in a horror movie that I’ve ever seen.

10/31 - Don’t Answer the Phone (1980) - 1/5
- A psycho gets his kicks killing women and calling a radio therapist. After a decent opening scene, it’s all downhill. The movie is not suspenseful and is completely predictable.

Cheer up, Ryan! At least you participated in the very swanky HTF Halloween Challenge. It's a very exclusive club! Matt had to turn away hundreds of applicants, including Roger Ebert, Salman Rushdie, Stephen King, Paul Reubens, Terrell Owens and Weird Al Yankovic!

Bah. Your Thanksgiving will be a lot better.

Unfortunately Scott, if you were to meet the family you would probably have to take back that comment.

Well, got my last two in before midnight.

30. The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen :star: :star: :star: 1/2

Okay, so it's not as good as the original version (hence the half star), but it's still great nonetheless. The original version I borrowed from a friend several years ago, and I only own TVYNS. I need to seek out a copy of the original before they really dry up. The changed/re-edited portions of the film didn't bother me too much. The restored picture and pumped up sound was a real treat, though.

31. The Thing (1982) :star: :star: :star: :star:

John Carpenter's masterpiece. Technically not my favorite Carpenter movie (which would have to be Halloween or Prince Of Darkness), but no one can deny the sheer brilliance of this "re-imagining" of The Thing. Supposedly closer in spirit to the original novella "Who Goes There?" that The Thing From Another World was taken from. The new transfer and sound mix on the new DVD is fantastic.

A recap (for those tallying the lists ;) )

It should be pointed out that the ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN film was made after HOUSE OF DRACULA. So, if anything, the idea of teaming a load of monsters with Abbott & Costello should evoke the reaction: "Hey, what are Abbott & Costello doing? This isn't a HOUSE OF film...!" :)

Matt's 2004 Scary Movie Recap
Okay, I thought I'd write up a little recap on the good stuff and bad stuff that I saw this year. It was definitely a landmark year for me as far as new discoveries are concerned. I decided to really challenge myself to watch as many new ones as I could get my hands on. I ended up totaling 56 new films. That's 12 more than my total take last year. I'm so impressed with you guys that topped my total, because I worked my ass off to watch this many movies. Every moment that I wasn't working, I was watching a horror movie. I'll start out with the films that fell short of my expectations...ones that I'll hopefully never
have to sit through again.

Disappointments
Slumber Party Massacre - I heard good things from people on this forum about this one, but I think it fell flat. The parody stuff was funny, but the killing was uninteresting. Not very scary, and the acting was bad enough to destroy most of the potential.
Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth - I know Justin likes this one, but I thought it was sucktastic. The stuff with Doug Bradley was the only interesting aspect. He seems to command the viewers attention when he shows up...in or out of the Pinhead make-up. Speaking of make-up, the costume design was very uninspired as was most everything else.
Hellraiser 4: Bloodline - Obviously I wasn't expecting a winner here, but it still managed to disappoint. The idea of a cursed family line is interesting, but the explanation of the box, etc is really futile. Having a puzzle box as a plot device is forgivable, but explaining it only dumbs it down more. Just leave it as a device.
Nightbreed - My opinion of Clive Barker was shooting through the roof until I saw this stinker. The script is way too schizophrenic to possibly get a good result. Some interesting bits with Cronenberg, but overall a loss.
The Toolbox Murders - Seeing as Tobe Hooper remade this one, I figured there must be something good about it...but I was wrong. The killings start out interesting, but with no character development for the victims, it quickly becomes posturing. Pretty boring and uninteresting with bad direction.

Pleasant Surprises
Maniac - Hell of a film. It was able to balance cool killings and gore with an intriguing personal story. Elements of Ed Gein stories with a great performance from Joe Spinell make this a real winner. Like May, the personal story is what drives this one and makes the horror aspects have all that much more of an impact.
Raw Meat - I haven't seen too many cannibal movies, but this and The Hills Have Eyes are the best. Donald Pleaseance is so fucking good in this film it's embarrassing. I'll watch it again just to see his performance. Also a hell of a cameo from Chris Lee.
Haute Tension - A new one not yet out in the states. I posted rants about this in every thread possible after I saw it, but the fact is that it's a hell of a horror film. The intensity is stronger in his film than anything released in the last couple of years (at least since Irresponsible). The twist may annoy me, but the more I think about it the more I like the film. I got so excited when the trailer popped up before Saw last Friday. :)
Saw - Like Haute Tension, another step in the right direction for the horror genre. Focus on story and intensity. I've posted a lot more in the discussion thread, so I won't repeat myself this soon after the release.
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 - I've always been a fan of the first Hellraiser film, but hadn't seen any of the sequels until now. This film is almost as good as the first. It takes the fairytale theme to the logical next step and introduces a hell of a new character. The subplot with the origin of Pinhead is great too. I love Doug Bradley.
Dead and Buried - The second Gary Sherman flick in my list. Strong direction and a story out of a twilight zone episode make this a very enjoyable film. Great performances all around, especially from Jack Albertson. I'll soon be picking up the Blue Underground release of this film.
The Burning - Oh how did I not know about this film before. A knockoff of the Friday films that manages to be better than all of the Friday films. Great gore from Savini, solid direction, and an interesting villain. Bonus points for early Jason Alexander :)
The Devil's Backbone - I went out and bought this right after I watched it. Guillermo Del Toro has to be one of the hottest directors right now. I'm not the world's biggest fan of Cronos, but everything else he's done has been great. The Devil's Backbone is an amazing film. I was trying to think of some pithy blurb to sum it up, but I don't think it's possible. Definitely track this one down if you haven't seen it.
Dog Soldiers - Thank you Scott for pestering me into watching this one. It was a blind buy, and a great one at that. Amazing gore for a low budget film. I somehow avoided most of the hype for this one, and came into the challenge thinking that Ginger Snaps would be the big werewolf film for me, but I was wrong. This is a hell of a film.
Session 9 - Another film that Scott (and Justin) highly recommended. I had some problems with the plot details, but they seemed meaningless compared to the strengths of the film. Peter Mullan was really amazing in the film. I'll be tracking this one down shortly.

Overall, this was a hell of a month. I got to see a bunch of great horror films, and I got bed-sores :)

I'll make sure to post the final tally in the next couple of days. Make sure you get your last updates in. Congrats to all!

Well, here's my last update! I wanted to watch at least 31 films and I got to 59, which is more than I ever thought I could watch in one month! (*I just noticed that I had been miscounting all month long; I accidentally numbered two different films #37!)

10/31/04

The Wolf Man (1941) :star: :star: :star: :star:

For me, this is still the greatest werewolf film ever made and the one by which all others must be judged. Something about that misty forest, the old legends and poems, the folklore, the myth. Lon Chaney is excellent as the doomed and sympathetic Lawrence Talbot. Jack Pierce creates another classic makeup and remains the best makeup man that ever lived. The music score is one of Universal's best.

Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) :star: :star: :star: :star:

This has always been my personal favorite monster movie. It's the first-ever pairing of monsters in a horror film, the first "monster rally". As good as Chaney's performance was in THE WOLF MAN, he even tops himself here. Rich with atmosphere, eerie music, and the best Wolf Man sequences in any of that character's five movies. I have always defended Bela Lugosi's maligned performance as the Monster, because the creature was performed as half-blind and now possessing the brain of Ygor (as seen from the close of THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN). As originally shot, the monster was to speak as Ygor again (as in the GHOST climax) and convey that he is weakened and sick and scarcely able to see (which is why the monster walks around groping and behaves clumsily in this movie). But the dialogue and explanation of the monster's troubles were edited out before the movie was released, thus making Bela's performance appear stiff, awkward and unmotivated.

House of Frankenstein (1944) :star: :star: :star:

Just a fun film, this time adding even more monsters to the mix (Dracula, the Wolf Man, Frankenstein's Monster, a Hunchback). The script is full of contrivances and the pace is too episodic, but it's still a good time with Boris Karloff back as the mad scientist. J. Carrol Naish is his deformed assistant, and he's marvelous as the sympathetic hunchback. John Carradine is refreshing as the new Dracula. Elena Verdugo adds spunk as the gypsy girl. I like the love triangle/jealousy between the girl and Chaney/Naish. Not "high art" - just fun.

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) :star: :star: :star: :star:

A great comedy, often considered the duo's best. The monsters here are better woven into the story and have more to do. So in a way they're treated even with more respect than they were in HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN or HOUSE OF DRACULA. A great asset is returning Bela Lugosi to the cast to play Dracula, for the first time since 1931. I always watch this one every Halloween - it's just a fun and very festive film for the occasion.

Horror Hotel (City of the Dead) :star: :star: :star: :star:

This is another permanent staple for my Halloween Nights. It's one of the best horror movies of all, IMO. I saw this as a kid in 1970 on New York's Creature Features when I was 8, and it's always left its mark on me to this day. Even though I watched the excellent VCI DVD version (where it's restored to its original English title, CITY OF THE DEAD) the film will always be HORROR HOTEL to me. Outstanding direction from John Moxey, much ambience, and creepy moments. Patricia Jessel is a standout as the head witch. People often comment on the similarities between this and PSYCHO (released the same year) but this film was actually made first, according to director Moxey and star Venetia Stevenson.

Les Diaboliques (1955) :star: :star: :star: 1/2
A plot to murder a man goes afoul when his body disappears.

The Silence of the Lambs :star: :star: :star: :star:
Two serial killers for the price of one in this modern horror classic which introduced Anthony Hopkins’ version of Hannibal Lector.

Dracula (1931) Spanish version :star: :star: :star:
The Spanish features a much more fluid camera & is less stagy compared to Browning’s version. However, this one is missing the unique performances of Lugosi & Dwight Frye. A nice companion piece, but I still prefer the US version over this one.

Dracula’s Daughter :star: :star: :star:
Good follow-up to Dracula. A mysterious countess appears in London as Van Helsing is tried for murdering Dracula.

Son of Dracula :star: :star:
Lon Chaney stars as Count Alucard (get it) as he visits America in this average Universal effort. I’ve never been much of a fan of Chaney (with the exception of Of Mice & Men) & here he just doesn’t have the presence needed for the role.

House of Dracula :star:
Lackluster effort as Universal throws just about everything into the pot. Dracula seeks a cure, as does the Wolfman, enter a mad doctor, his female hunchback assistant & throw in the Frankensten monster for good measure. This one makes Van Helsing look good.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein :star: :star: :star:
Bud & Lou take on the Frankenstein monster, Dracula & the Wolfman in this comedy classic.

Young Frankenstein :star: :star: :star: :star:
Mel Brooks ode to the Universal Horror films is a classic itself. The funniest Horror/Comedy ever made IMO.

Most pleasant surprise.

Maniac - As a teen back in the 80's I thought I'd seen just about every sick & twisted horror film available so I don't know how I missed this one. Even though my taste in Horror has veered away from the slasher genre (with a few exceptions) this is one of the better ones.

Biggest disappointment.

My wife & friends got me out to see Saw on Sat night. Tried 3 local theaters, two were sold out & the third couldn't accommodate a guy with a cast except for trying to stick us in the very front row. :frowning: No thanks.

Anyhow, this was a blast revisiting these films & catching a few I've been wanting to see. A big thanks to Matt for setting this up. and congrats to all who participated. :)
