Matt---Do you have the R2 disc of LAST HOUSE from Anchor Bay? The movie is cut but there's a second commentary track by the cast as well as a second disc worth of extras, which makes the MGM release look bad. If you're a fan of the film (or not a fan) it's certainly worth getting. If you thought Krug and them were bad in the movie you should hear them in the commentary. I'm rather shocked no one has killed them since the release. Their talk is a lot more brutal than anything in the movie. There's also an 8mm version of the film under the title KRUG & CO. but there's no added footage and the quality is pretty poor.

I turned a friend onto MGM when they made their disc. MGM used some of his stuff in the promo gallery and from what I heard, Craven refused to let MGM say "from the director of SCREAM" on the package because he didn't want the SCREAM fans buying this movie thinking it would be something similar.

Blue Underground also just released a rape/revenge film called NIGHT TRAIN MURDERS, which is supposed to be a lot more brutal. I haven't seen this one but I'm going to try and pick it up tomorrow.

Horrors of Spider Island (1960) :star::star:1/2

A plane full of beautiful models crash into a deserted island. They spend their time showering and showing off their beautiful bodies until their pimp is bitten by a spider and turns into a spider monster. I love watching bad horror films because you never know when you’re going to find something that becomes a favorite. This here has become a quick favorite due to how wild, stupid and over the top it is. The dubbing is atrocious but adds to the fun, especially the country girl. Most of the time the beautiful girls are jiggling in front of the camera and that’s never a bad thing.

Spider Baby (1964) :star::star:1/2

One of the strangest films ever made centers on a strange family living in a mansion being run by a chauffer (Lon Chaney, Jr.) who is keeping their secrets. The secrets is that they are a bunch of murdering psychopaths who enjoy putting people in a spider web and killing them. This is a rather unique film due to its strangeness and the fact that anything can happen here. Throughout the film you just keep waiting for the next bit of strangeness and it’s also clear to see this influenced John Water’s Pink Flamingoes. Lon Chaney, Jr. delivers a brilliant and very touching performance.

Kingdom of the Spiders (1976) :star::star::star:

William Shatner goes to investigate the death of several cows and soon discovers that large tarantula’s are teaming up and killing people. This is your typical nature attacks film but it’s one of the better one’s thanks to some wonderful direction and an intense ending, which borrows from Night of the Living Dead. Shatner makes for a good hero and the rest of the cast is good as well.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) :star::star:

What a bitter disappointment this one was considering I loved the remake of Night. I personally don’t mind remakes even if the original film was great and I give the filmmakers credit that they tried to change this thing up but none of the changes really served any purpose. The mall was totally useless and made for a very boring setting but the worst thing is that I didn’t care for any of the characters, which meant I didn’t care who lived or died. The zombies were all horrid, especially the CGI groups of zombies. I just don’t like these fast moving zombies so I hope Romero doesn’t use them in his next film. The MTV style editing also gave me a headache. The only good moments were the father changing scene and the cameos from the three original movie members.

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) :star::star::star::star:

A brilliant send up of the George Romero films. I first saw this around 1986 when I was six years old and I remember going into school the next day and scaring all of my classmates because I told them Louisville, KY (45 miles from us) was blown up due to zombies. The film is very funny and contains some great gore, which is great on both accounts. I’ve seen this film around 20 times and it never loses its punch. This is the most fun you can have with a horror movie.

I only have the MGM release, because I don't have region free capabilities right now. I may have to drop some money for a region free player and pick that one up. Sounds really interesting.

Only two today so far. I'm tired, but I may get one or two more in...

The Evil Dead - A classic. Bruce Campbell shows why he's such a lasting face in the genre. The gore effects are amazing, and the story is good. Sam Raimi's interesting storytelling methods work really well in this film. I've said so much about it in the past, that it's hard to conjure up new things. A landmark film. A++

Silver Bullet - A fun King adaptation that I used to watch a lot as a kid. The cast is great with Gary Busey, Terry O'Quinn, and Everett McGill. Not a great movie, but the atmosphere is pretty strong, and the performances are good. Nostalgia seals this one for me.

Haha, I know you didn't. I was just joking. :)

To be fair though, I'll have to go back and re-watch Last House. It just might be one of those instances where I'll see a movie once, and form a negative or neutral opinion about it, then see it some time later and find it a lot more enjoyable the second time around.

For instance, in this very month's challenge, I watched Halloween III and didn't really like it at all. I gave it one star for a rating. But after a couple of weeks, I find myself thinking about it a lot, and my memories of watching that movie seem to be taking on a certain fondness.

Like I said about Texas Chainsaw Massacre: I'll probably watch it again for next year's challenge, or maybe even sooner. I rented it from Netflix, but when I saw it for $7 at DeepDiscountDVD.com I had to buy it. It seems likely that I will enjoy it more with repeat viewings.

For years and years, I remembered I Spit On Your Grave as one of the most vile movies ever made. But then I got the DVD to review and found a new appreciation for the thing. Yes, it's ugly and exploitative, but there's something about the non-glorified way in which the violence was depicted that made me realize how effective the film is.

Plus Joe Bob's commentary offered a lot of insight on the movie. Here's my review if anyone gives a wet slap. ;)

I got a bit of a second wind and fit in two more.

Evil Dead 2 - Another classic that is as good as the first. It's shot really well, and the effects are amazing. Style bleeds from the film. Bruce Campbell gives another great performance.

Army of Darkness - Not as good as the first two, but still a lot of fun. Much more slap-stick than the others, and less focus on horror. Bruce mentioned on the commentary that the first submission got an NC17 from the MPAA. That is insane. It's hard for me to understand the X for Evil Dead 1 and 2, but an NC17 for 3 is nuts. The director's cut has a great ending, and another great show from Bruce Campbell.

The Return of Doctor X (1939) :star: :star:

A pretty weak affair that has a doctor performing blood experiments on the dead. Its only interesting aspect is getting to see Humphrey Bogart in an unusual part as a ghoul.

Update for Tues night through yesterday

The Birds :star: :star: :star: 1/2
Hitchcock’s apocalyptic classic is the last truly “great” film he made.

Jaws :star: :star: :star: :star:
B picture exploitation gets the A picture treatment in this classic about a rouge great white shark with an insatiable taste for humans. Spawned many weak imitations & piss poor sequels.

The Fly (1986) :star: :star: :star: 1/2
One of the top 3 Horror remakes of the modern era (the others being Carpenter’s The Thing & Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers).

Godzilla: GMK :star: :star: :star: 1/2
Godzilla returns to his roots as an evil incarnation of the A bomb. The effects & battle scenes are some of the best in the series. This is tempered by the hokum of having three monsters as Earth’s protectors. Still this is the best Godzilla movie since Honda’s early/mid-sixties films.

Matango :star: :star: 1/2
Also known as Attack of the Mushroom People in the States. Shipwreck survivors land on an island full of gigantic mushrooms which they really shouldn’t have eaten. Fun surreal weirdness from Toho.

Doctor X :star: :star: 1/2
Would make a good double feature paired with Mystery of the Wax Museum. A weaker film compared to Mystery though it features a similar cast, crew & visuals.

It Came From Outer Space :star: :star: :star:
Benign Aliens crash land on Earth in this minor classic from the 50’s.

Village of the Damned (1960) :star: :star: :star:
Creepy classic as a village’s women seem to have bred with alien visitors & have spawned an evil brood.

Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein :star: :star: 1/2
Gorgeous Art design & very good performances are marred by Brannagh’s overblown & ham-fisted direction. Not nearly as compelling as Whale’s & Fisher’s entries.

Sleepy Hollow :star: :star: :star: 1/2
Tim Burton’s Gothic ode to Hammer, Universal, AIP & Bava is the most visually stunning Horror/Fairy tales ever made. A nearly perfect Halloween treat.

Spasms (1983) {F} - Yes, I've actually seen this movie. Twice now, actually. It was a hazy memory from my early horror years, but now I'll always remember it as...just awful. Giant P.O.V. snakes and unconvincing splatter FX. And Peter Fonda. And Oliver Reed.

Frankenstein (2004)* {D-} - Wait, get this...giggle...Parker Posey and Adam Goldberg play...snicker...hard-boiled New Orleans cops...chuckle...who discover that their local serial killer is a Frankenstein. Oh wait, it gets better. Michael Madsen is in it! And directed by Marcus "TCM" Nispel! Its badness approached surreal proportions. Apparently it was meant to be a pilot for a series, but whoever was smoking THAT crack pipe apparently got fired from the USA network. ;)

The New Kids (1983) {D} - Pseudo-horror revenge thriller about white-trash Floridians and the teenaged orphans they terrorize. Aside from a young James Spader and his hilariously platinum-blonde 'do, this one's a yawner. Directed by Sean "F13 Pt. 1" Cunningham, too.

Frankenfish (2004)* {D+} - Giant fish eats people in the bayou. You get what you pay for with giant fish flicks, and this one's got some solid gore and a so-so body count. Directed by the guy who did Spawn way back when, and very little since.

Rosemary's Baby (1968) {A-} - Had to get the DVD. Damn is this thing good.

Gremlins (1984) {B+} - Polly Holliday = a modern-day Margaret Hamilton

Final Destination (2000) {B-} - The good bits are great, but DAMN if this doesn't drag its ass through acts 2 and 3. Sequel's better!

Zombie Lake (1981) {F} - I was in a zombie mood, and this is one I'd never seen. It is, indeed, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Hilariously bad, yes, but amazingly astoundingly bad.

I found I Spit to be so vile and offensive that I wish I could expunge the memory from my brain. Don't care to ever see it again. To me there is a world of difference between it and Last House which recasts a classic European film through a horror lense and actually attempts to tell a story. The director's statements about I Spit somehow trying to provide me with a "rape" experience, please, it was grist for the grindhouse/drive-in circuit. Designed to shock and raise controversy so that it would generate maximum bookings without a marketing budget. It's the same strategy HGL used in the 60's.

Love Spider Baby's though. It's really too bad Jack Hill quit making films. He made some B-Movie gems like The Big Doll House and Switchblade Sisters and the best blaxploitation film, Coffy.

I think the Dawn remake works on the same level as a lot of horror/sci-fi movies featuring stars. We care about the stars, Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames because they are Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames, everyone else is cannon fodder. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but did you really care about the soldiers in Aliens aside from Bill Paxton? They're in the movie to die, plain and simple. Yes some movies rise above this concept and are the better for it, but I don't think it automatically makes a movie bad when it doesn't do it.

I didn't care for Planet of the Vampires. Bava made a number of very good horror films, but Planet I just couldn't get into at all. There were no characters that stood out and for some reason, low budget sci-fi bothers me a lot more than low budget horror. I can watch loads of crappy horror movies like The Gore Gore Girls but have little interest in sci-fi b-pics.

I've looked at the "Zombie Lake" VHS box a million times and always wondered about it, but I never rented it. Not sure if I should or not based on Scott's review :D

Agree with Jim on The Birds, though I do like Marnie quite a bit as well, and even the next one with the Spy stuff that a lot of people don't like (can't remember the name).

GMK I was disappointed by. Yes the effects are better, but I didn't think the fights were and the human stuff was weak as usual. I know I'm in the extreme minority in liking things to be a bit sillier and more fantastical. The 90's and 00 films try to be too serious (for the most part), but they don't have the production value, acting, or concept to pull off that tone and make it believable. I like my Godzilla fun, and GMK is not a fun movie. But then, this is coming from possibly the only Godzilla fan in existence who really enjoys Son Of Godzilla and Godzilla's Revenge and who liked G2000 and GvMegaguirus a lot more than GMK (or Mechagodzilla).

The Lair Of The White Worm - An archeologist and a dandy (Hugh Grant) uncover a snake/vampire woman who worships a giant worm god in this immensely fun movie from Ken Russell. Like Re-Animator and Peter Jackson's early films, it gets the horror/comedy ratio perfect. Between this and Altered States I really like to see more of Russell's work. Another one to add to the collection. A-

Eaten Alive - Some movie titles leave you wondering what the movie could be about. Eaten Alive has no such gray area. It delivers exactly what it promises in typical cannibal movie fashion. But I found this to be a cut above the other cannibal flicks I've seen in that it has a story beyond people getting lost in the jungle and stumbling across a group of cannibals. Eaten Alive features our protagonist attempting to save her sister from a religious/Luddite cult that has sprung up in the jungles of New Guinea. (Big difference :D)

Featuring better-than-usual performances for this kind of fare, including the omnipresent Mel Ferrer balances apocalyptic fanatacism with the gory cannabalism of the genre to create the only cannibal film I could recommend someone see. I like the whole "wink-wink" movie reality of the cannibal concept, I just wish these films didn't feel the need to include animal mutilation which is so obviously real, as opposed to the obviously fake human gore effects. Was this something 70's genre fans were clamoring for? SAMPLE TEST AUDIENCE RESPONSE: "I loved the scene where the chick gets her breasts cut off, but I'm a little disappointed there weren't more scenes of alligators getting butchered." B

The Bird With The Crystal Plummage - Dario Argento's first film showed that he was a masterful director from the very beginning. One of the eary giallo films, Bird is a suspenseful, thrilling excercise in style involving an American writer who observes a murder and then becomes caught in the investigation as well as becoming a target.

It contains wonderful set pieces, like the opening murder scene, that demonstrate Argento's wonderful vision and imagination. The comparisons to Hitchcock are not unwarranted. With cinematography by Vittorio Storaro and an Ennio Morricone score, the film has excellent technique and mood as well. Only in comparing this to other Argento films I love even more does this fall a bit short. A-

WOO-HOO, I hit the 31 mark (didn't come close either of the other 3 years I participated) and I still have 3 days to go!!

The funny thing with I SPIT is that it didn't receive any controversy when it was originally released as DAY OF THE WOMAN. Critics gave it decent reviews but no one went to see it. When it was re-released as I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, I guess the title had people lined up and ready to go but this is when the controversy started. When originally released it was never meant as exploitation but Jerry Gross then stepped in and made it one.

The most vile film I've ever seen is SALO.

Another question that I have, is can I count multiple viewings of one movie in my list? I enjoyed Dawn of the Dead so much the other night that my friend, that has never seen it, is coming over tonight to watch it.

I am probably one of the rare people that actually really liked this movie but yes I did! I saw it at the theaters the first time last May and had a blast! Now that I have the DVD, I watched it again the other day and once again had much fun in doing so!

8. The Astronaut's Wife (10/29/04)

The first "paper view" movie I ever saw off my dish back in 2000... I recently got an excellent deal off the DVD and purchased it. I find it to be a really good movie with a good cast... Excellent leading man and woman.

First time viewings in bold:

10/28 - Revenge of the Creature (1955) - 3.5/5
-A group of scientists go back to the Black Lagoon to capture the creature for study in Florida. I know many people don't care for this movie, but I think it is vastly underrated. It certainly didn't deserve the MST3K treatment. The scenes where the monster jumps out of the pool scared me to death as a child.

10/29 - Eyes Without a Face (1960) - 5/5
- A talented doctor is determined to provide his daughter with a "new face" regardless of the costs. This is easily one of the most beautiful horror movies I've ever seen. I first saw the movie on the big screen last Spring and immediately fell in love with it. IMO, the transfer on the new Criterion disc is stunning.

10/29 - The Mummy's Tomb (1942) - 2.5/5
- The mummy, Kharis, rampages in America. IMO, this is the worst of Universal's mummy films. Nearly 1/4 of the movie is devoted to clips from The Mummy's Hand. We learn nothing new about the mummy and nothing much happens.

10/29 - The Haunting (1963) - 5/5
- This is the standard story of a group of psychic investigators visiting a supposed haunted house. I don't care how many times I see this movie, it never fails to provide chills. I've read numerous complaints on the internet about Julie Harris' role in the movie. While I can certainly understand people having a problem with the character she plays, I don't see how anyone can fault her acting. The movie also features some amazing set design.

I went to see Saw at the theater again today, and damn is it a fine film. Only 2 new ones so far, though...

Seven - Falls in with Silence of the Lambs as a really good mainstream horror movie. In fact, I think Seven is much better than Silence. Stylistically it's up there with Fincher's best film, Fight Club. The acting from Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt is great, and Kevin Spacey is amazingly creepy.

Day of the Dead - Not as good as Night or Dawn, but still a lot of fun. Savini's gore is terrific, and the acting is pretty good all around. Bubb is definitely the most interesting zombie character filmed :)

Jeff,

I would say get Rosemary's Baby since you seemed to like movies like The Omen. Not alike, but sort of to me.

If you like Halloween and Ghostly stories/slashers, you might like The Fog. If you like Carpenters work, you will probably like or find ok at the minimum.

Videodrome seems to have a love it/hate it style from what I have seen. I dont know how to explain it.

Scanners is good if your into Sci-Fi crossed with Horror elements.

The Amityville Horror is good if you like Haunted House type stories. Part 2 is actually a prequel of sorts as well as well.

Last House on the Left is the sleaziest of the choices you have listed. This movie has all different effects. Some like the style. Some hate the movie. Some think it's vile, depressing, & disgusting. Some think it did good for what it was. I dont know. Definately not a fun movie at all I dont think. Only if you can handle exploitation thats done in a sickly way. Definately not for everyone.

Out of the choices you have listed and crossed with some other movies you seem to like, I would go with:

1. The Fog

2. The Amityville Horror (1979)

3. Rosemary's Baby

Okay, first update since way back on page 13.

Night of the Creeps- This came on the Mystery channel late, and I had to stay up and watch it. Extremely fun mixture of zombie, teen, and sci-fi film elements. Tom Atkins is one of my favorite horror personalities, and he chews the scenery like there's no tomorrow here. My favorite part of the movie is probably where he comes face to face with his past in an alley. Its a travesty this hasn't hit DVD yet.

The Blob (1988)- One of the elite remakes. When I first saw it, I was quite surprised by how graphic it was. There's some fantastic death sequences, that's for damn sure. Gotta' love that sink scene. Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith are both great, and I like the new origin for the blob itself.

Prophecy- John Frankenheimer's nature amok film. Despite it PG rating, there are some nasty images present. The mutant bear is quite menacing, and her howl is rather chill inducing. Love the part where she crosses the lake to get to the main characters. The wooded, mountain locations are quite lovely, and I can't forget to mention the infamous sleeping bag kill, haha.

Vampires- One of Carpenter's most hated films really isn't bad if you ask me. Its not great either though. James Woods is one of my favorite actors, and its great seeing him as the badass, Jack Crow. The hotel slaughter scene is pretty groovy, though badly edited, and the film's western feel is nice. The scene where the wimpy priest attempts to save Crow towards the end is a great little sequence. Most of the film's action isn't all that exciting though, and the final confrontation between Crow and Valek feels anti-climatic. The score is easily one of Carpenter's weakest too. Bottom line, some parts are good, others are pretty lackluster.

Shock Waves- Easily the best of the Nazi zombie flicks. Of course, there's not really much competition in that category, with the likes of the excruciatingly painful Zombie Lake and all, but this film is actually quite good. The zombies are pretty menacing, and its nice seeing genre veterans Cushing and Carradine. The island setting is atmospheric as well, adding a suitable sense of isolation.

The Beyond- Fulci's most celebrated film is good, but quite overrated. It is good at being a literal nightmare on film, and the surreal nature of most of the sequences can't be denied, but its nowhere near as successful as, for example, one of Lynch's celluloid nightmares. There are some nice kills, as usual with Fulci, and the zombies are pretty creepy. In the leading roles, Warbeck and MaCall make a great duo. I enjoy Warbeck's increasing displeasure with MaCall, until he finally realizes she's telling the truth. The hotel is also ripe with atmosphere. Still, the film just isn't on par with some of the other Fulci work I've seen. There are also some rather laughable sequences, the main one being a guy having his face (or shoddy makeup) torn apart by fake tarantulas.

Stagefright- Soavi's slasher film is one of the best of its kind. The film is drenched with style, and the murders are quite pleasing. The odd jazz score works, and the killer's owl mask is one of the better slasher masks out there. The characters aren't very likable, minus the director, who I do like despite him being the most hated character of most viewers.

The Church- Soavi's would-be Demons sequel is truly bizarre, and doesn't make too much sense, but I still love it. Perhaps Soavi's most stylish film, and its pretty much style over substance. There's some truly gorgeous imagery, as well as some morbidly fascinating imagery. The film starts out coherently enough, but halfway through, it changes focus, discards characters, and goes crazy. There are really weird sequences galore, and with their bizarre charm, as well as the magnificent imagery, they are quite fun.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II- The best of the series. There are some great ideas on display, all adding even more to the mythology. Leviathan, the labyrinth, people's own personal hells... all great additions. Dr. Channard is also an outstanding character, the film's standout. His showdown with the main Cenobites is one sweet sequence. If I have one complaint about the film, its that the Engineer doesn't return. Still, fantastic stuff.

A Nightmare on Elm Street- The film that truly put Craven on the map. Very original, stylish, and quite creepy. Freddy is a marvelous villain, and Langenkamp makes for a strong heroine. The dream sequences are beautifully realized, and the film's unique score is perfectly fitting. Its always nice to see John Saxon, too. The only thing I don't really like is the very end. There are better Craven films, but this is among his best work.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge- Never have seen why this sequel gets pissed on so much. I think the only sequels better than this one are Dream Warriors and New Nightmare. I find Freddy to be even creepier than he was in the first one, and his possession of Jesse is a great touch. The scene where he emerges from Jesse's body is pretty grotesque, and the sequence where Freddy arrives at the party is classic. Great little sequel.

Suspiria- A masterpiece on several levels, and Argento's best film in my eyes. It contains some of the most beautiful imagery ever caught on celluloid, and the score is one of the greatest scores in film. There are some truly nightmarish scenes, and the film has atmosphere in spades. Also, while many say the story is weak, I disagree, and quite enjoy the story that is present. I also like the ending, which many also say is weak. Outstanding film. I decided to watch Inferno again afterwards, but won't count it again.

Haute Tension- Gave this another viewing for the first time since my initial one. Disturbing, graphic, really well done, and of course, intense. That decapitation is just crazy. This is just as good as I remembered, and I still think the ending works fine.

Half-Caste- Why did I rent this?! One of the most boring, mind numbing films I've ever seen. Some of the worst acting too, while the characters are already deplorable and annoying to begin with. Lame creature fx too. Definitely one to avoid.

The Birds- This is my favorite Hitchcock film. It still amazes me that he actually succeeded in making birds frightening. The acting is good, and Hedren is great at seeming stuck up. The shot with the birds on the jungle gym is classic of course, and the latter half of the film has an always pleasing bleak, apocalyptic vibe. The ending is perfect.

The Grudge- Doesn't live up to the Japanese films, but is still a worthwhile viewing. There are some nice additions, as well as new spins on certain aspects from the original series. The score was rather overpowering at times. The opening with the always reliable Pullman was pretty surprising, while the sequence with the lovely KaDee Strickland at her apartment is probably my favorite part of this film. Gellar is okay in the leading role, and its great seeing Ted Raimi and the lead from Audition (the detective) present. Not a groundbreaking remake, but worth a viewing.

Jacob's Ladder- Brilliant film, one of the greatest the 90s had to offer. Very disturbing at times, not to mention extremely touching. The horrific imagery is quite unsettling, and the acting is some of the best I've seen. The somber score adds to the incredibly dreary, saddening mood of the film, and there are so many outstanding sequences. Aiello's speech about angels and demons is especially powerful. A hellish, yet beautiful piece of cinema, truly magnificent.

Dawn of the Dead (European Cut) - This is the only cut of the film that I hadn't seen, so I decided to give it a spin. Good, but not nearly as good as Romero's extended cut. The editing was a little suspect in spots, and I didn't like the music in this as much as the other versions. I'll probably be sticking with the extended cut from now on (though I'll probably revisit this one to listen to the cast commentary sometime in the future).
