My final tally for this year's "Noirvember Challenge" is 90 movies. Of the 90 movies, 68 of them were first time viewings. Next year, I'm taking a different approach to this Challenge. I will only watch 30 movies next November, in order to spend more time analyzing each movie including any bonus material.

Death of a Cyclist (1955) — Our last November Noir was this Spanish film shown on Noir Alley last weekend. We’d seen it before but it is well worth another viewing. A couple having an illicit affair hit a bicyclist with a car. What follows is a fascinating study of guilt from multiple perspectives.


I had a modest total of 14 for the month, but we were away at the beginning of the month and again around Thanksgiving. In a more typical November I would probably get to 20 or so.

sorry not to have been able to participate more, did manage to get in 5-6 more films than listed but then had a house guest that came for the holiday, and spent the next 6-7 days disrupting the house, they wont be coming back.

With my sister out of the country most of the month, I had to take care of my Mom's transportation and general care alone. That took a chunk out of my time. I really was enjoying the process and I have loved reading all the reviews. Looking forward to next year no matter which month it is in.

Well, this one had been sitting in my DVR for a while. Finally got around to it:

GRAND CENTRAL MURDER (1942) Decent murder mystery with Noirish elements. It has all the basics: Private Eye (Van Heflin), murder, shady suspects (including Tom Conway) and a gorgeous duplicious femme fatale (Patricia Dane).
It's a bit talky and largely limits itself to only a few locations, but the night-time photography by George Folsey is moody and well-lit - fortunately, the dialog is pretty good and has some wit. Best line is when Heflin says that they ought to give a 'Nobel' to the murderer because the victim is so unlikeable! There are some nice character bits by Virginia Grey, Connie Gilchrest, Betty Wells and Sam Levene as a befuddled cop.

GRAND CENTRAL MURDER is available as a $3 streaming rental. It's on DVD from the Warner Archive. It shows up on TCM as well.
