The radio just reported that the Cowboys might have just released Quincy Carter. Quincy had not showed up for the last 2 practices. A press conference is forthcoming 11:30 PDT. Hmm...interesting...

The Cowboys website has mentioned that he was escorted out this morning and ESPN's Len Pasquerelli has said they will release him. I wonder what happened over the past few days that would convince them to let him go. He did win 10 games last year with a craptastic running back as well as a bad offense line. Then again they say that Henson has been looking quite good. I figured if anything they would get rid of a 3rd stringer but in Parcells I trust

A very surprising occurrence—just yesterday Qunicy Carter had been full of confidence, saying that he was the starting QB, even though Parcells (as always) maintains that all positions are open.

The local experts claimed that Carter had matured and was not the same person who reacted badly when the Cowboys acquired Chad Hutchinson a couple of years ago. This does bring the number of quarterbacks down to three: Vinnie Testaverde, Drew Henson and Tony Romo.

There are strange goings on indeed. Last night the late news was full of pictures of Terrance Newman catching passes with the offense. When asked, Parcells only said that he did not have to tell the press everything.

The more I think about it, the more I can’t figure why they would just release him.

Carter may not be the best NFL quarterback, but surely he has some trade value.

The Quincy thing seems to stink. Sad that Tim Brown leaving the Raiders is washed away by a Quincy Carter story (and I'm a Cowboys fan). I agree that he definitely had some trade value (late round pick, at least). When well-coached and given time, he's a competent QB.

I can only assume that a) there is more to the story and b) Parcells knows what he is doing.

I can hope,
Chuck

Edit: Could be a rumor, but I am hearing drug test. But not any weak test like Ricky fails...Carter is true to the tradition: COCAINE :frowning:

We'll see in 35 minutes.

ESPN story on Carter

Screw him for now, I'm going to comment on Tim Brown.
I expect he will be released sometime either today or tomorrow, and I'm dreading that headline. Tim Brown has been a Raider for as long as I've been a fan, he's been the one constant.

Al Davis told Brown that he was going to be the 4th or 5th receiver for the team this year, and Brown didn't like to hear that news, but really who would? He's seen a large drop off in production the last couple of seasons which makes me wish he'd just retire instead of try and play somewhere else this season. Much like Jerry Rice leaving the 49ers it will seem very odd to me to see Tim Brown in another uniform. He's by far and away my favorite Raider ever!

But, they want Jerry Porter to be the man and they expect big things out of Doug Gabriel and they drafted 2 receivers in April. I figured this day was coming sooner or later, but it still leaves me pretty sad anyway.

He can't play on special teams, and doesn't want to be the 4th or 5th option sometimes not even dressing for games, so they're going to part ways. It really stinks, at least from the perspective I always thought he'd be a Raider, and now unless he decides to retire it doesn't look like that will happen. But hey, if Jerry Rice couldn't play his whole career for the 49ers, why should I not be surprised that Tim Brown didn't get to play his whole career for the Raiders.

Oh, and count me among those that are kind of surprised about the Quincy Carter thing, I did a doubletake when I saw the headline. I really don't know where he might end up going after this, and if he was driven away from the team hotel, that makes it seem kind of curious to me. I guess we'll find out when the Tuna has his news conference.

Tayler fires agent...again

You know, this guy might have been one of the best players in April's draft, but I'm now really happy that the Raiders drafted Gallery instead. He may even try to renegotiate the contract he had just signed with the Redskins. This guy might be a big time player on the field, but he may have already been, may be right now, and may be a large head ache in the future for the Redskins.

Also very similar to Emmet Smith. He had to be the number one guy even after his skills had eroded.
I could've mentioned Emmitt Smith in that earlier post, as its the same deal, with him leaving the Cowboys last season, but honestly he went to Arizona...had a bad year and I completely forgot he was in the league still until about 3 seconds after making that post.

Chris Perry is 1 of 2 unsigned Bengals draft picks, but other than him, Winslow and Rivers? it sounds like most/all the round 1 picks are signed.

Interesting story Casey. I did not really follow all of the details of the draft—even so I was quite surprised to see that he had been compared to Ronnie Lott.

Is this guy just reading (and believing) his own press clippings or what? There have been a lot of fine safeties over the years, but Lott is pretty much in a class by himself, with only a very, very few who can meet that standard.

Roy Williams was too. Roy lived up to his expectations. I suspect that this kid in Washington will too. Then again I would say that Williams has a pretty good mentor right now even thoug he is hurt(his mentor).

For some reason I still think Tim Brown can play. I don't think that is the case for Emmitt.

If anything this deal with Quincy speeds up their transition to Drew Henson. They say he tested positive for a substance.

Shane, I also think that Brown can play, but he can't be what he wants to be which is a team's number 1 option. In the article I read on ESPN.com about this and I've read a lot of them since yesterday, it sounds like he still thinks he could lead this team in receptions.

I don't doubt though that if he goes somewhere else as a number 3 receiver he won't be productive, but in Oakland

Rice is better than him.
Porter is better than him.
and Gabriel if he's not better than him, is pretty close (he's had a real good offseason and good camp so far anyway)
Receiver must be the one position where the Raiders want to go for youth and not experience.

Brown would like to play for the Cowboys as he is a Dallas native, but I don't know that they'd have interest, and if they did would he be anything more than the 4th receiver? Maybe third. A paper out in the Bay Area, I think the S.F. Chronicle suggested Detroit and Arizona, as both have talented young receivers but could use some veteran influence.

Where else could he go? San Francisco doesn't seem very likely although to have Brown go to Rice's old team like Rice came to Brown's old team would pretty much fit my definition for irony.

Darren Woodson is certainly one of the best and Roy Williams has been very, very good, very early. Two of the hardest hitters in the NFL—they live up to the tradition of some of the Cowboys’ safeties of the past, like Cliff Harris.

Crash Harris hit so hard that his teammates dreaded him in practice.

Even though I’m a Cowboys fan, it is pretty hard for anyone to live up to a comparison with Ronnie Lott.

Titans Sirmon likely out for season

I give this link because I pose this question. Am I the only one that thinks that out of all the teams that played in the postseason last year, Tennessee has the potential to be the team that regresses the most?

They've got a bunch of rookies on the D-line, and had to make some salary cap hits they probably wish they didn't have to absorb.
This team could be in that 7-9 range or they could win the division, with a coach like Jeff Fisher they'll be ok, but I see them as being in the most trouble especially since both Houston and Jacksonville appear to be better within their own division.

Taylor suffered a mild eye injury in an offseason workout when linebacker LaVar Arrington rubbed a shaving cream pie in his face.

Reading stuff like this just makes me even more thankful that the Ravens have Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, not clowns like these guys, leading the defense.

To catch up:

1) Tim Brown is still valuable in the locker room. I'd be happy if he was a Cowboy, even if only for a year.

2) The Titans were probably the second or third best team last year, but the offseason has been very tough on them. I would NEVER write off any team led (in all senses of the word) by Steve McNair, but he's got A LOT of miles. That said, they have good coaching, and some smart vets, so we shall see. They are also in a brutal division (well, it will be, with the Texans and Jags getting better, and the Colts).

3) I agree with Lew regarding Ronnie Lott. Let some guys play a few years before we compare them to All-NFL team players like Lott. I love me some Roy, think Taylor could be great, and think Darren Woodson is just short of immortal...but Lott? Nope.

4) Jerry Porter has speed and talent, but not discipline or endurance. I don't see him being much of much...ever.

Oh well...I love football,
Chuck
