Just in time to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the September 8, 1966 airing of the very first Star Trek episode, Paramount Home Entertainment and CBS Home Entertainment will debut the following new releases for every fan’s collection on September 7, 2021:



STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL 4 MOVIES 4K ULTRA HD/BLU-RAY COLLECTION

For the first time ever, experience the original four Star Trek films in stunning 4K Ultra HD. Newly remastered versions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (both the theatrical and director’s cut), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home are presented in high definition along with digital copies of the theatrical version of each film.
  
  STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES: THE COMPLETE SERIES STEELBOOK
  For the first time ever, the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series will be released on Blu-ray in highly collectible Steelbook packaging. Featuring every episode in brilliant high definition, along with over nine hours of previously released special features, including cast and crew interviews, commentaries, documentaries and archival materials, the 20-disc set will be packaged in three stunning Steelbooks, all housed inside an eye-catching slipcase commemorating the 55 years of Star Trek.
  
  FATHOM EVENTS
  In addition, in celebration of the 55th anniversary, Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures will bring Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home back to select cinemas for a special two-day event on August 19 and 22. Additional details will be announced at a later date.

  The U.S.S. I'd rather axe TMP and make it II, III, IV, and VI since that's the only story arc in the OG Trek franchise.

I don’t see the sense in releasing an incomplete collection- they should release these as individual titles.

Yes, agreed. However, the trend — especially from studios like Paramount — is to release boxed sets as they are aware fans will pay more to get the one or two films they really want out of that collection.

Then they screwed that up. Nobody wants the theatrical cut of I and VI is one of the most popular films in the franchise.

It makes no sense. However, the only two rational explanations that come to mind is either one, the people running Paramount have absolutely no idea of what they have and what they are doing, or, they are trying to optimize sales by forcing people to purchase an entire set for the few titles they want.

And then to make matters worse, they announce on the same day that they are working on the Director’s Cut of the first film which initially seems like it will be locked into their streaming service. Why couldn’t Paramount have waited to release any Star Trek film on 4k until the DC was ready and then put it out as a complete set?

Most everyone we knew at all the studios that we had the utmost faith in doing the right thing with their library are all gone. I have no idea who is running the show at any particular studio. Paramount has made some wonky decisions with their PRESENTS lineup which by all counts, should be the cream of their library. Now this with Star Trek. At the moment, it really seems like this is a matter of studio executives not having a clue about the titles in their library — something that has been mentioned here several times in the past.

The four movie set appears to hit a price point that the studio thinks fans will pay without devaluing the cost of the work by charging too little per title while not serving as too high a cost to entry by including so many titles that the price is higher than people would pay. There are also widespread replication capacity issues, a slowdown in restoration/remastering work due to the pandemic, and a deadline the studio wanted to hit in time for the Trek anniversary in September.

Regarding the TMP director’s cut, that will cost money to redo, much more than just remastering the theatrical versions of all the other films. Paramount hesitated for years because they did not think the revenue generated from physical media sales would be enough to recoup that investment, which is frankly not an unreasonable assumption. Instead, the director’s cut is being financed by Paramount+ and will premiere there first before coming to disc, akin to a new film premiering in a theater before coming to disc, or HBO Max paying for the Snyder Cut version of Justice League.

I applaud Paramount for looking outside the box and finding creative ways to make this project viable. If the new Trek shows hadn’t been such a draw for P+, this probably would never have happened.

Would love to see a Steelbook version of this set like they did with the Indy box.

Guess I'll probably just wait then...

I am not buying any of these 4k releases as presently offered.

First and foremost, it's incomplete. With the DC eventually seeing a 4k release, I would rather wait till then.

I have all the Star Trek films on digital. Most all will be upgraded to 4k. KAHN has been in 4k for at least two years now.

There is just no hurry to buy a set that seems...rushed. No doubt there will be better offerings of these 4k titles by the time the DC makes it to disc --- and I do think that the Paramount+ exclusive window will be short and allow that disc release to happen given the costs involved in the restoration.

I’m with Josh - I applaud Paramount for doing this. They’re finally responding to what the fans want, and they’re putting them out in whatever manner they feel they can make a profit from. I will support this release and the inevitable ones to follow.

I guess I'm an outlier in preferring the theatrical cut of Star Trek: TMP over the Director's Edition.

Just keep in mind that if too many people do this, the message Paramount will get is “there’s no interest in remastered versions of the film on disc, therefore we will not continue with these releases.”

Paramount went on a limb doing this, the thing we’ve all wanted since the original Blu-rays underwhelmed in 2009. I don’t care how many installments they split it into. I’m glad they’re finally doing it after a decade of concern that it wasn’t financially feasible to do it.

The Blu-rays at least will have individual releases too:
