I was very excited to finally get a widescreen version. It was a great transfer and excellent sound as well. Blew the existing VHS out of the water.

Yeah, I had two laserdiscs I used to use for comparisons between tape and laserdisc when selling the latter format to friends as the superior technology for watching movies: Raiders of the Lost Ark and North by Northwest. The comparisons between the tapes and discs were astonishing.

It's quite a sad situation because Spielberg declared he would no longer change his films. That's basically true for E.T. and Close Encounters. But then Raiders ended up with a revisionist color grade, remixed sound and several digitally altered shots.

With Close Encounters on UHD BD, I was a little surprised at the VFX alterations that were made for the mothership scene.

The original sub titles are gone too if I recall. But all in all, another good reason to keep the original BD.

I never noticed that. Are the altered shots in all cuts of the film, or just the director's cut?
