It doesn't matter because your decoding will be done by your receiver -- assuming you have a receiver that was made in the last 8-10 years. When you get the DVD recorder, just run either an optical or coax digital audio cable from the DVD recorder to your receiver and your receiver will take care of the decoding.

Thanks! I just realized that I posted in the Speakers forum :eek: ..Sorry!

So, being that the decoding is not an issue, any suggestions as to which recorder to get between these (samsung vs. panasonic).

The recorder will be used for watching movies and converting home videos to DVD

I'm probably not the best person to ask. I own several panasonic pieces, though, and haven't had any problems with them -- however, none of them have been DVD recorders.
