The Academy Award® winner about star-crossed love that spans the years – and the globe. After her triumph as the lunchroom temptress in the crime classic The Postman Always Rings Twice, Lana Turner expanded her range with Green Dolphin Street. Set in 19th century Europe and New Zealand, this sweeping romance tells the story of two beautiful sisters, one headstrong (Turner) and one gentle (Donna Reed), and of the man (Richard Hart) who marries one even though he loves the other. The film’s riptides of emotion are matched by breathtaking physical tumult: a fierce Maori uprising plus a catastrophic earthquake and tidal wave that earned the film a 1947 Oscar® for special effects. With its dramatic story and spectacular visuals, Green Dolphin Street drew huge audiences for epic moviemaking, being one of the top-ten box office hits of the year.

I’m on board for “Green Dolphin Street”, as this marks WACs fourth offering of an Oscar nominated work by DP George J. Folsey; inclusive of “Meet Me in St. Louis”, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “Million Dollar Mermaid”.

Mr. Folsey received 14 career nominations and, wrongfully, never received a single win. Thanks to WAC and their superb archival efforts, we are gaining some great examples of his work.

Perhaps, one day, we may also get to have Mr. Folsey’s “Executive Suite” (1954), “The Green Years” (1946) or “The White Cliffs of Dover” (1944).

Green Dolphin Street is just one of those movies you know could have been better, despite its monumental production values and all-star cast. I'm in for it too, because I've always managed to see the virtues beyond the vices. But the picture really isn't as grand or as inspiring as it ought to have been, given its source material. And yes, the DVD was wonderful, so the Blu should be nothing short of miraculous.

Certainly Bronislau Kaper's lovely score deserves mention too. Ironically, although the score is symphonic in style, it's main theme became a jazz standard in the ensuing years. Trivia: when first announced, it was MGM's intention to cast Katharine Hepburn and June Allyson as the sisters Lana and Donna played!

Amazon added a pre-order link that shows April 16th as the release date, but that's on a Friday. I suspect that's a type with the actual release date of Tuesday, April 13th.
