How do you get 1000 miles of desert in Oregon? The entire width of the state is only 400 miles, and it's certainly not all desert.

Well, they're definitely taking some artistic license here, but Oregon didn't become a state until 1859. When it became Oregon Territory at the signing of the Oregon Treaty with Britain in 1846, it encompassed present-day Oregon, Washington, Idaho and parts of Montana and Wyoming.
