Today, The Challange. By the end of the 1970’s, John Frankenheimer was hitting a low ebb in his professional career and personal life. Black Sunday (1977) underperformed expectations at the box office, his follow up to that movie – Prophecy (1979) – didn’t fare much better from critics and audiences (although it has acquired a small cult following) and his attempt to make First Blood with George C. Scott as Col. Trautman and Brad Davis playing John Rambo (let that sink in for a minute) fell through; his problems with alcoholism also were rearing its ugly head as well. In 1981, Frankenheimer headed to Japan where he would make a film that would be a personal turning point for him, The Challenge. Previously released on Blu-ray by Kino – through their licensing deal with CBS/Paramount, the company has given the movie a brand new Blu-ray release.
