PlayStation ads, disguised as graffiti, criticized

    Excerpt from the above:

Nice plan Sony, using stealth advertising to target poor kids who don't know any better. [IMG]

    This company is unbelievable.

Their top people really must live in some kind of corporate fantasy land at the tops of their glass towers, where money truly is their one god and nothing else matters.

I guess I don't see the problem. If a property owner is allowing it and being compensated, it seems ok to me. I guess it did break a billboard law in one juris, but its not really a billboard.

    Whatever.

    Exactly.

There's so much Sony deserves criticism for, but come on...

Its really not a problem unless the buliding owners are ok with it...but at the same time, the ads are quite dull. Living in Brooklyn, i've seen far better. [IMG]

Wasn't this a task on The Apprentice earlier in 2005's spring season?

I think so Patrick, but since this is Sony, they are evil. They can do no right and are the worst company in the world. If I didn't know any better I would swear they are run by Satan himself.[IMG]

Yep, they had to paint a graffiti-style mural for a PS2 game.

Did you all read the entire article?? Sony's name is nowhwere to be found in this "art". And this stuff is being targeted to young people, not adults who can see through such underhanded tactics.

Many people like myself don't like Sony Corporation BECAUSE they pull stunts like this on a regular basis.

I guess you never heard of their CD rootkit debacle that just happened a month ago, the one that became so bad that the State Of Texas is suing them over it, and Elliot Spitzer (N.Y. attorney general) is investigating this situation himself?

How about their use of a made-up/non-existant movie reviewer to feed legit publications glowing reviews for them to print?

Or: the fact that they held up the most sucessful consumer format ever, the dvd, back in the 90s because at first they wouldn't agree to join the eleven other companies for one unified format?

And they helped to f**k up surround music because they broke away from the Dvd Consortium to launch their own surround format (sacd), in turn splintering the market.

There's more but I figure that's enough for now.

Let's not forget dropping Widescreen transfers on a vast amount of their dual format flipper DVDs. Can't think of any justification for that except pandering to Wal*Mart to make $$$ at the expense of artistic intent.

I think most here would agree that Sony has done a lot to piss off consumers in the past year.

I just don't see this advertising campaign as one of them.

They are not advertising guns to kids here. They are advertising a game to their primary demographic by trying to make it look cool. TV does that all day and there have been tons of TV campaings that have omitted obvious brand identification.

Agreed. On a consumer level, SONY is losing the battle, but again, on a professional level, I can't find much fault.

I agree Sony hasn't had the best year, and has made many strange decisions in the past, it just irks me at how much grief one company takes. Its quite amazing really, and I really don't want to get into a huge argument, but they have done some real good things too. Co-creating the cd format with Phillips, the new HD cameras that are being used by the film industry, Beta-for all its consumer level flaws, Betacam has been a huge asset to the commercial industry and finally the PS2. That really helped DVD get into more households than just stand alone players were accomplishing.

Look, I am not saying that Sony is the greatest company in the world, but damn if they aren't the most ridiculed consumer electronics company, I don't know who is. It just seems as though its cool to rip on Sony at every little chance.

And before anyone says anything, my system isn't all Sony either. The only sony equipment I have now is a old reciever and a broken XBR.

Yeah, but Bose deserves it. Sony at least has some good products like the Trinitron to its credit [IMG]
