Why do some 16x9 TVs have, what I'll refer to as, a very glossy glass, while others have more of a matte or non-reflective glass. Visually, I prefer the matte-type glass. The other is too shiny and inferior to me.

are there advantages of one or the other?

Just my opinion and taste.

The glossy screens usually appear sharper and will have better contrast. The matte surface will scatter some of the light, reducing both sharpness and contrast. The glossy surface will have more problems with reflections, but I prefer to deal with those than to lose picture quality.
