Jonathon- Most of your points actually are also relevant to choosing a global value for the crossover too. (Does anyone actually think that Bose Cubes go down to 80 Hz?) Beginners sure, but I don't think most of the people here on HTF qualify as "beginners"!
Don't forget, that having individual settings for speakers or sets of speakers, also allows a user to experiment for themselves in terms of what is best for their equipment, in their room, with their material. Even with individual adjustments, you can still use one setting for all speakers. With a global crossover, that choice is taken away.
