I had the opportunity to just glance at
this week's Billboard Magazine. In
their Home Video section there is an interesting
story about DVD recorders and copy protection.

What is most interesting here is news that
recordable DVD players (if I read this correctly)
are not only going to be able to handle all 3
formats (DVDR+, DVDR-, DRV-RAM and rewritables)
but the prices of these units will be $350 around
holiday time.

From what I understand, these are stand-alone decks.

These players will have built in copy protection
that contains "copy once" technology.

Ron, I certainly hope you read this write. It sounds good.

I assume they would play DVDs and CDs like the current more expensive recorders. Is that a safe assumption?

Sounds fair, much like SCMS. However, since there is no digital cable standard for the entire DVD stream I can't see how they can implement. I REALLY hope they have firewire built in. I'd love to make DVDs of my DV tapes. I hope they handle music CDs as well :).
