Is this a good idea?
I have heard that it is ideally better to use 2 rear speakers for the rear center. If you used a y-cable RCA from the receivers PRE-OUT and connected it to a stereo amplifier with 2 speakers, wouldn't this work fairly well?
A sneaky way of getting 7.1 from 6.1? At least the speaker config.

Yes this will work just fine although I'm sure you can run two center off your receiver just fine. And you can sneak around all you want but two centers EX's is not what makes 7.1.
7.1 is a DSP decoding process derived out of 5.1/6.1 sources. For instance my local theater has 12 surround speakers, this does not make 17.1. What you are doing is setting your EX up correctly!

The center rear info is MAtrixed into the rear channels. You must decode it first to get 6.1

Chris, do you have a processor for the rear centre? If not, check out the Smart Jr. in the AVS store. If your area is small, one rear centre will suffice nicely. Best wishes!

He stated he is trying to create a 7.1 from 6.1, So he must have an EX processor of some type!
