PBS was launched 50 years ago on Oct. 4, 1970 and since i was a kid have watched many of the programs and below i have some of my favorites. I hope they will continue to produce more quality programing.

1) This Old House
2) Classic films that were broadcast in the late 1970's
3) British shows like Monty Python, Dr. Who, Faulty Towers, etc..
4) Great Railway Journeys of the World (BBC series late 1970's)
5) Connections, BBC James Burke series
6) The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power (series)
7) The American Experience series ( i have many of them)
8) Ken Burns documentaries
9) American Masters series (many i have recorded to disc)
10) Nova series (many i have recorded to disc)
11) Downton Abbey series

I may be Canadian but I was raised on PBS in the 80s. To this day I still support my "local" station, KSPS out of Spokane. Here are my favourites growing up:
  • 3-2-1 Contact (the best intro for any show ever)
  • Square One Television
  • Sesame Street
  • Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
  • Cosmos
  • The Joy of Painting
  • The Electric Company
  • Doctor Who
  • Evening at Pops
  • Nova
  • Polka Dot Door
  • Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
  • The Secret City Adventures
  • Nature
  • The Frugal Gourmet
  • Yan Can Cook
  • Louisiana Cookin'
  • The Galloping Gourmet
  • The French Chef
  • Fawlty Towers (for my money, "The Germans" is the funniest 30 minutes in the English language)
  • Are You Being Served
As I grew older my tastes broadened to include shows that I used to roll my eyes at my parents for watching:
  • The Red Green Show
  • The McLaughlin Group ("Issue one!")
  • Masterpiece
  • Austin City Limits
  • This Old House
  • The New Yankee Workshop
  • Frontline
  • Independent Lens
  • Antiques Roadshow
  • America's Test Kitchen (the best cooking show ever)
  • Cook's Country

I still remember when Basil gets frustrated and folds himself down into a...a...I don’t know what. I cried with laughing tears. Or the one when the lights go out.

Learning that PBS is 50 years-old reminds me that none of the great PBS children’s shows were available when I was a kid. No Mister Rogers or Sesame Street for me.

Has anybody ever heard of the American Archive of Public Broadcasting? It's a fantastic website that I look at almost every day. They've got almost every episode of the "PBS NewsHour" and its previous iterations, as well as many NET programs. They add more content nearly every month, but so far I've not seen any of the programs I've been yearning to see, such as "3-2-1 Contact," "Nature," "American Masters," among others. They've also got every "Sesame Street" episode, but with a catch: you're only able to view them in-person at WGBH in Massachusetts or at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
