Actually not weird. That was not the new WAC restoration, but the old SD master with TCM’s sometimes wonky upconversion which has all sorts of compression issues. The white specks during the MGM logo were exactly what was on the old WAC DVD.

Comparing it to the DVD caps on dvdbeaver.com, TCM just unsquezzed to 2.1 instead of 2.35, it's not cropped.

everything in that picture is great
love Lee J. Cobb reprising his Johnny Friendly gangster personality, Tayler was never more suave and Cyd Charise. I fell in love with her when i first saw this on my little square 19 inch black and white tv. Seeing this in full color, for Cyd alone will be worth it.

Just finished watching this compelling crime drama, which has the best performances by Robert Taylor and Cyd Charisse I've ever seen. Cyd Charisse has charisma to spare in this complicated role, and Robert Taylor is more expressive and poignant as an actor than he was in some of his earlier films I've seen. Nicholas Ray directs at times in a slightly surreal style, with Dutch angles, etc. The finale had an unusual resolution—or at least I hadn't figured out it was going to end that way. PQ is excellent for this widescreen color noir. Perhaps I missed it, but I couldn't find a review for this title. My rating: A-.
