To me, it didn't really matter that the obstacles might not be what would be done in a real-life heist. I mean, honestly, they are only going to show stuff that doesn't have much chance of succeeding. They did a good job of setting up the heist and the obstacles needed to succeed and then having the 11 pull it off.

One of the biggest laughs for me was when the guy was running away from the casino with the armload of cash and then the police shoot him and the background music is "Take My Breath Away"!!

One point that I would like clarified is why did Yen take the 3 jewels out of the briefcase? Just to make it look like the were valuable and through suspicion off of Saul as being part of the heist??

Also, with the ending do you guys think there will be a sequel.

I don't think we'll see a sequel. I think your hunch is right about the 3 jewels.

I enjoyed the 3 best attempts to rob a casino as well! Dark humor at its best.

why did Yen take the 3 jewels out of the briefcase?
Weren't they the explosives he attached to the inside of the vault door? Probably safer to transport them separately than to carry them with him inside that cramped cart. (Also riskier in that the briefcase may not have been where he could get to it without setting off the motion detectors....)

*Spoiler*

Well, they needed Saul to be in the control room so they could loop the tapes. The only way to get him in the control room was to have him move something into the safe. I figure they needed something in the briefcase that looked valuable, and they could make explosives that looked like jewels (you can see Basher making them with the chemicals).

So yeah, they were the explosives.

Honestly, I don't think the details about Casino security and such are really that important. The movie set up a heist with a given set of obstacles to overcome. As long as the movie maintains an internal consistency and can hang together on those merits I think it is fine. I think Ocean's 11 did that, more or less. I was very much entertained watching this gang try to solve the riddle the movie presented.
I concur completely with this. I enjoyed the movie a lot.

Thanks Derek, sounds like an interesting thing. Soderbergh is taking WTC too hard, IMO, and letting it effect his work. He also changed the title of his next film to accomodate. From: How to Survive a Hotel Room Fire to Full Frontal. The first is a lot more interesting and really, wtf does it have to do with WTC?

Just saw this one tonight. To me, it played a lot more like "Out Of Sight 2" than a remake of the original. But I see that as a good thing.

On a personal note, I couldn't get over the actor who played the geeky "computer/surveilance guy." I can't remember his name, but he starred in a TV commercial I wrote 2 or 3 years ago!

Wow. My first brush with greatness.

I thought Oceans Eleven was pretty average. It was
passable entertainment although I thought it was rather flat. Sorta like a leisurely paced Mission Impossible with mega-stars.
The story, performances, pace, etc.. were all fine but certainly not as good as they could have been.
Julia Roberts fared the worst in a
thankless role, plus she looked bad.
In short...a throughly mediocre star studded "A" list "B" heist flick.:D

Please people, can I ask for a simple opinion from someone. How doe the new version of 'Ocean's Eleven' compare with the old one?
The original Rat Pack version is one of my favorite films and I have seen it over 30 times (and no doubt will see the DVD just as often). It is by no means a great film, but a glorious one without doubt.
I am from England where the new Soderbergh version has not yet been released. Try as I might, I have been unable to appreciate Soderbergh's directional style and thought 'Out of Sight' was one of the worst movies that I had ever seen. From the comments made in this thread, it appears like 'Soddy' has again brought in his irritating 'stop/go' directional style to Ocean's Eleven as well.
I'm definitely going to see the new film, but something tells me that i am going to be very disappointed.

Actually this film is almost an entirely different film than the original except about robbing the casinos and Danny Ocean being the main character. The original film's charm is all about the "Rat Pack". I grew up watching those guys in films and television. So I'm sure I am very forgiving for the original's shortcomings as a quality film but I still have fun watching the original as I will with this newest version of "Ocean's 11". Both films have a certain charm but the degree of charm for each is much different for me.

I'm starting to like Brad Pitt more and more! I really liked his performance in this film. Also, two of the last surviving cast members from the original were in this film for a brief shot during the boxing match. The shot captured Angie Dickinson and Henry Silva together.
Also, if you don't like the director's style of shooting films then I doubt you will appreciate this film.

I enjoyed this film for it's coolness.

I loved the two Utah dudes, and how come Brad Pitt was eating something in every scene?! Too funny!

One thing about the original I prefer...they lose the money by accident. And somebody figures it out as well and is going to blackmail them.

I think the original has many charms beyond the Rat Pack, although Frank makes me nuts like he does in almost everything he does.

While I think this falls short of Soderbergh's other work, it was an enjoyable two hours of "check your brain at the door" entertainment. It's what most summer popcorn flicks aspire to and with a much better cast.
So Clooney was more about the girl than the money. Gee, where have I seen this before? Oh yeah, just last year in O Brother, Where Art Thou?. Maybe somebody could do a scorecard of Clooney's films to total up whether he goes after the girl or the money more often (Out of Sight, Three Kings, O Brother, Ocean's Eleven...).
One moment I thought was funny was Don Cheadle's character watching the destruction of the hotel on TV while it's happening right behind him out the window.:)
"I'll get outta this truck and drop you like 3rd period French."

Was the movie projector did this or the film has Lip synch problem. It's very noticable with the first scene with Elliot Gould. It happened couple other scenes after that too.

The movie was OK. The preview looks much better though. With all the big well known names. I never saw the original so I don't know which one is better.

What's Julia Robert doing in this movie anyway. I think she just did the director a favor.

I'll suggest to wait till it's on cable. Don't even bother renting it.
