it's only in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco, according to Hollywood.com. Argh! I wish this would get a re-release here in the Seattle area. I'd really like to see it again on the big screen, even though I'll get the dvd in December.

Mmm..seems funny this movie is being rereleased. Possible shot at best picture nod? Whatever happens, so far its easily my best movie of the year.

Do ya think so? :)
Seriously, aren't those the 4 cities that a film must play in to be considered eligible for Oscar contention?

Fox made this announcement in early September for a possible Oscar push.

The rules are one week in a theater in L.A. county. But Moulin Rouge already qualified months ago.

Hmm, I wouldn't mind catching this one in the theater one more time before the DVD arrives. But I'm really anticipating getting the DVD in my hands so I can do what I couldn't do the two times I saw it in the theater last summer -- crank up the sound to the appropriate level!

It's still playing in a local theater here for only $3 (that's just under $2 in US dollars). At that price, I have to see it again before it comes out on DVD. :)

I saw it twice in the theater when I was still up in Anchorage - only film this year to get me to do that (though I wanted to with AI, and never made it back). Definitely looking forward to the DVD release.
Oh, and BTW Aaron - great sig!

Glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that...would've needed a new keyboard.

Really, when did the rules change? I'm almost 100% sure that it used to be 4 cities...I think the ones mentioned.
Yes, I realize it already qualified prior to this.

I think they're just trying to refresh Academy voters on the merits of the film. I read somewhere that the push isn't really for Best Picture, but for acting nods for McGregor and Kidman (given her strengths here and in The Others, she has a shot at a nomination, I think). I think they may be going for best song, too ("Come What May" was original to this, right?).

Woody: I laughed a lot when I read it too (the quote in my sig), which is why I had to use it. It was a response to a question someone asked about capalert's rating of Jurassic Park in Ebert's movie answerman column.

Unfortunately not. "Come What May" was written for (but not used in) "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet", and is ineligible.

I wasn't aware that the Academy rules just *recently* changed on this. But this is how it stands now.

I thought NYC also qualified. LA County for sure.
Rain, I'm almost 100% the others are unnecessary.
Just look at upcomingmovies.com or IMDb. They often list the LA/NY release as the "Oscar engagement" with the film going to "wide release" after that date.
Anyway, Moulin Rouge has had a full release quite some time ago. It's not like it didn't play a couple thousand screens already.
This release is simply to put it back into the minds and conversations of the nomination committees. I also think it's VERY smart that the DVD release hits mid-December. Just in time to be alone as an Oscar-possible film DVD release, and to be the "hot" title for a week or two.
Just think how we were discussing the problems with SCREENER TAPES (sometimes not even OAR!!!). You get the voters looking at this DVD just before nominations get done and it sure can't hurt.
Right now it seems like Moulin Rouge, Memento, and Shrek are the 3 films getting the most "push" for an Oscar. Sure Memento doesn't have the big money, but it's still getting lobbied for pretty heavily and even the small distributor is putting a little weight into it.

Yup guys...I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD myself!! I think the film's chances for Best Pic are rather promising. Personally, I think it will score a Best Art Direction Oscar and Best Original Song. Another hot favourite for the Best Pic nod would be Training Day. Denzel Washington might get his second Oscar too.

It's already re-opened in Australia with billboards saying to catch it again on the big screen before seeing it on the small screen (the DVD).
One Australian DVD magazine (DVD NOW) has "the making of Moulin Rouge" as a giveaway on DVD in its next issue - it does come on the actual DVD as an extra but getting this a few weeks early is a bonus.
It's apparently an official Fox promo thing so maybe other countries may get it as a giveaway.
I'll post and let people know what it's like next week.

It's still kicking around in these parts. It just played at Star Cinema in Sidney last week and it's playing in Victoria two more times at UVIC before year's end (and also out and about in Vancouver the past few months). Neither of those are top cinemas with digital sound, mind you. :)

Man, didn't Peter say this was in DTS? Seems like I was pretty happy hearing him say that, but now I don't remember for sure.
Call that an unconfirmed "yes" at this point. :)
But site's like DVDEmpire don't list DTS.
Maybe what I remember is that it was planned but then pulled off???
