I know I shouldn't be asking but, I need a new modem for the damage modem in my computer. Now I can send it in for service but I figure that if I gave to Circuit City under the warrantee, it would take weeks just for the Modem replacement. Now I've seen modems for about 30 to 40 bucks including the stand alone modems. Which one do you guys think is better the internal 56k modem or the outboard modem. Picking it up this weekend (maybe from Best Buy and the 10% coupon).

It sort of depends. :) From what I understand, an external controller based modem is the way to go if you seek performance. I have a winmodem myself, and have experienced no problems. Winmodems tend to have more features like answering machine, &c.; but they cannot be used in, e.g., Linux.
