I've read that too, but have been unable to verify it. If it's true, it's a disgrace to the cheap bastards who would deny the world the complete film.

I really hope Criterion gets a crack at the eventual DVD release- they're the one company that has done silent films right (as the Passion of Joan of Arc and the upcoming Haxan demonstrate). But I'm in no rush for the DVD- I'll wait until they get all the available materials together and can do a truly definitive version. I'm also hoping they can rope in Gillian Anderson (not the actress, the silent film score expert) to recover the original score. Anderson's work is amazing!

But since older stocks (such as 50's Eastmancolor) are quite a bit less fine grained than even stocks of fifteen years ago, would extra scanning resolution make a difference even directly from the negative?
