I think the rainbow effect is overblown. It definetly is an issue with the lower priced models with the slower color wheels, but I think its a big nothing.
I also believe that everyone can see the rainbow effect, the reason some people complain and others dont is how picky a person is and how well the unit is setup.
I have a notorious unit for rainbows, the x1. But once I calibrated it and put about 50 hours on it, it has been a complete non issue, even with black and white movies.
I think the other thing effecting people is how big the image is they are projecting. If you keep a viewing distance of 2x screen width rainbows should not be problem, and less then that and they will be.
