The Senator has private balcony boxes that people can rent and bring in whatever food and drink (alcoholic or non) they please. I like this idea except that I don't think I'd enjoy being so far removed from the screen, and unless each box has its own separate sound system, you would miss out on directional effects.

Hell, why stop there? Why not have those
guards frisk people as well? If your found to have a stick of Juicy Fruit in your pocket, that's an outside food which is a direct violation of theater rule #12 chapter 6 verse 5, the theater task force will then swarm the offending bastard.
He/she/they will then be quietly escorted to a back room where they're hands will be busted mercilessly with ball pean hammers like in 'Casino',
warned that this sorta shit doesn't happen around here, and thrown out into the alley with the rest of the trash.
When I was an usher we used to fantasize about this world all the time. The job would have been soooo much more fun if we could have done this, as opposed to just being glorified janitors :D
Whenever my mom gets bothered by someone talking or making noise in a theater she always reminisces about the movie house in the town she grew up in. According to her, if you spoke or made noise for any reason at all during the show, you were thrown out, no questions asked. I have to admit, considering how obnoxious people can be, that policy always sounds pretty attractive to me :)

Holadem,
Like the AMC "MovieWatcher Deluxe" program that was being tested in a few cities before apparently being scuttled because a few studios pulled their films
Jason,
I didn't know it had been tried before :b. If it didn't work, then I guess no one is going to take it up again.
I wish it did work though, sounds like a good idea, mainly because I proposed it first in this thread! ;)

Good one John. Seriously though, how can you get mad at someone who has to go to the bathroom? Some people do have overactive bladders. Should we discriminate against them? In a perfect world everyone would behave and watch the movie quietly. But obviously we don't live in a perfect world so you basically have to live with these "inconveniences" or just not go to the movies and wait for the dvd. I go to the local multiplexes in the Providence area and very rarely run into any annoying situations. Maybe i'm just lucky?

Jason:

From what I've seen the Framingham one is pretty successful. I live in Waltham, so I tend to go to either Framingham or Fenway for movies since they're both 15-20min drive and are nice theaters.

Fri/Sat is usually completely sold out for good movies. The rest of the week is usually pretty dead (especially the late Sunday show, I've been in there with just my friends before) but the rest of the theater is fairly dead, as well.

The food is OK, but it's nice to be able to get a beer and have try tables to eat on in front of you. You get free popcorn and soda too. And, of course, the big leather reclining seats are nice. There are love seats on the side for couples, as well.

The crowd has always been well behaved when I was there.

It's well worth the money for a good movie, imo. It pretty much solves all the problems I've ever had in theaters before too, without setting up too many hard-set rules. There is usually an usher in the theater too, though like I said, the crowd was always good while I've been there.

Such a theater more or less already exists - the Arclight in Los Angeles. You pay $14 for reserved seats, oversized leather chairs and an usher to ensure your utmost viewing pleasure. I've been there. Its a great place and everyone was well-behaved.
Edwin, that's exactly what I was thinking of when I read this thread. I watched "Cinema Paradiso: The New Version" there this year, and I must say that it was my best experience in a movie theater. Ever.
I didn't mind the price, because the service was exceptional. When I bought my ticket, the cashier asked where I would prefer to sit and gave me a ticket with a seat number. The seats were the most comfortable I have ever seen... the armrests were adjustable and there were even footrests! The presentation was incredible, and the place was beautiful! Even the restrooms had class. :)
Unfortunately, I don't think that this theater will survive long. The multiplexes make money from the young masses who want to see the latest blockbusters, and from popcorn/concessions sales.
What the multiplexes should do to accomodate film lovers, is to reserve special screenings in the week during which certain rules are enforced (Sunday nights, for example).

I don't no how any of you guys ever enjoy a movie. Sure I get pissed if someone is talking on their cell phone or putting their feet up on my seat, but why should I concern myself with someone going to the bathroom? If it really bothers you that much spend more time and money in your hometheater. Otherwise just try and enjoy the show and save your complaints for those that truly have no consideration for others.

The solution to all your gripes already exists and it's called "stay home and wait for the DVD". And there's a similar solution for all the audience-caused inconveniences of attending live sporting events such as baseball and football games.

I couldn't care less if someone's cell rings during a show, but when they answer it and sit there talking, then I want blood.
