Regarding Godard's Contempt, unless I've missed something, there has not been any recent discussion or rumors on a possible release. There seems to be an "iffy" distribution rights issue associated with the title.

Well, here is Tartan videos rather extensive line-up from now until March next year. You might like to remember that Tartan have a reputation for shit DVDs sourced from theatrical (hard subbed) prints, although the Truffant discs look likely to be licensed from MK2 (I hope
wink.gif
):
Tartan have let us know of their line-up for the start of 2002.
21st January
"BATTLE ROYALE (2000) "
The box-office sensation that shocked Japan! It's the near future and kids are out of control. The solution? Kidnap a class at random, abandon them on an island and give them three days to kill each other. Violent, surreal and very funny. Directed by Kinji Fukasaku and starring 'Beat' Takeski. Released on Tartan's Asia Extreme label.
"TRUFFAUT COLLECTION - DVD only"
Following in the footsteps of Tartan Video's retrospective of World cinema greats, the focus falls on the leading light of French Nouvelle Vague, Francois Truffaut. Available on DVD for the first time. The first titles in the series are:
"JULES ET JIM (1961) "
Truffaut's masterpiece starring Jeanne Moreau as the strong-willed Catherine who is wooed by Jules and Jim. With its freeze-frames, news footage and stills, Truffaut creates an extraordinarily modern portrait of an independent woman.
"LE PEAU DOUCE (1964) "
Truffaut's love of Hitchcock is evident in this dark thriller with Francoise Dorleac playing the femme fatale, an air hostess who's set on a crime of passion.
FEBRUARY 2002
"THE TERRORIST (2000) - video/DVD"
Directed by Santosh Sivan, whose latest film Asoka has received rave reviews. A young girl volunteers as a suicide bomber to assassinate a visiting politician. But her preparations for the mission offer other possibilities. A powerful contemplative film that's a dramatic study in emotional and moral dilemmas Featuring a stunning performance by rising star, Ayesha Dharkar who will be appearing in Star Wars Episode 2.
BERGMAN COLLECTION - DVD only
The next series of films by the world cinema master, Ingmar Bergman.
"WILD STRAWBERRIES (1957) "
A college professors reflects on his on his idyllic past between nightmares of regret in old age. One of Bergman's most heart-warming films and starring two of his most beautiful leading ladies, Bibi Andersson and Ingrid Thulin.
"CRIES AND WHISPERS (1972) "
Nominated for three Oscars, and winner of one, a harrowing tale of three sisters struggling with pent-up emotions, coping with loss whilst desperately searching for love. Bergman's greatest leading ladies - Liv Ullmann, Ingrid Thulin, and Harriet Andersson - give electrifying, haunting performances. Unforgettable.
"FROM THE LIFE OF THE MARIONETTES (1980) "
vMade in exile in Germany, an absorbing tale of tortured characters including a monologue from an ageing gay man that marks it out from the dominance of female characters in his other films.
"RING 0 (2000) - video/DVD"
The final chilling part of the acclaimed Ring trilogy! Directed by Norio Tsuruta. A tape recording of a political demonstration back in the 1950's seems to have sparked a series of unexplained deaths. As more people die over the coming years., it's clear that the curse of Sadako has been around longer than anyone imagined.
MARCH 2002
"HERSCHELL GORDON-LEWIS COLLECTION - DVD only"
The lid has been opened to the crypt of the Master of Gore and two more horror classics have been resurrected on DVD and video. THE WIZARD OF GORE and THE GORE GORE GIRLS
"THE VERHOEVEN COLLECTION - DVD only"
Two titles from the pre-Hollywood career of Dutch director, Paul Verhoeven, who brought us Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct . The Collection will include Keetje Tippel, Turkish Delight, Soldier of Orange, Business is Business and The Fourth Man.
Oh, and these are R2 UK of course

sigh - just after posting the huge Tartan list, here are some [irony] exciting [/irony] details of some of the previously known about Artificial Eye releases:
Artificial Eye have announced three DVDs for release in December - The Farewell, Liam and Solas.
The Farewell is directed by Jan Schütte. Set in 1956 Berlin, the film covers the last summer of Bertolt Brecht and the women in his life. Brecht is in the centre of the storm in a heaven and hell of human relationships: love and hatred, jealousy and egomania, betrayal and dashed hopes. The DVD is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 with an anamorphic 16:9 transfer and includes filmographies and production notes.
Set in Liverpool, Liam tells the story of a family’s struggle to keep things together amidst the ravages of the depression, vividly told from the viewpoint of a seven year old boy. The film is directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Dangerous Liaisons) and written by Jimmy McGovern (Cracker, The Lakes, Hillsborough). The DVD is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 with an anamorphic 16:9 transfer and includes theatrical trailer, filmographies and production notes.
The winner of 14 international film awards, including 5 Goyas, the Spanish Oscars, Benito Zambrano’s Solas tells the story of Maria who, disillusioned and embittered by her experiences with men, finds her only solace lies in drink. But when her father falls ill and is taken into a city hospital, Maria has to share her apartment with her mother - a woman whose simple life in the country could not be more different. The DVD is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 with an anamorphic 16:9 transfer and includes theatrical trailer, filmographies and production notes.
All three DVDs carry a 15 certificate and are released on 26th December with a retail price of £19.99.
Once again, R2 UK......

Hooray, apparently The Great Enigma of Kaspar Hauser is indeed coming out on 1/8. Looks like 5 Herzog discs:
Little Dieter Needs To Fly
Lessons In Darkness/Fata Morgana
Stroszek
Kaspar Hauser
Heart of Glass
Stoszek, Kaspar, Heart of Glass have the usual Hill/Herzog commentaries. Fata Morgana, like Even Dwarfs, also includes Crispin Glover.
Also Criterion announced another title for January, Michael Apted's Me and Issac Newton

I guess this qualifies as 'independent':

QUERELLE

Second Sight announce a January 21st release date for Rainer Werner Fassbinder's final film.

Adapted from Jean Genet's homoerotic novel, Querelle is a surreal tale of sex and murder that has become a cult favourite. Brad Davis stars as Querelle, an enigmatic, drug-dealing sailor on shore leave in the port of Brest. Amidst the sultry, highly charged atmosphere, he embarks on a journey of sexual self-discovery.

With its striking, iconic imagery, set against the orange glow of a permanent sunset, Querelle is a dreamlike experience and a unique piece of filmmaking.

The film is presented uncut and in its original ratio.

DVD Cat No: 2NDVD3032

RRP: S19.99

Audio: Stereo

R/T: 104 mins

Cert: 18

Presented in original 2.35:1 ratio

R2 UK as usual
