Fox-Lorber DVDs -- terrible unless proven otherwise. That said I don't have those two. But since you are in the PAL friendly UK, get the French DVD of Under The Sand. All the Ozon movies are out from Film Office, with English subtitles and anamorphic transfers, plus plenty of extras, including all his shorts. I have their Water Drops on Burning Rocks.

Do you know whether the commentary has subs on it for the French disc of Under The Sand?

Facets have updated the date for Kiarostami's Close-Up to "ON ORDER - Expected to ship on or before 02/04/2002". Features are listed as "Includes an interview with Abbas Kiarostami and Kiarostami and Makhmalbaf filmographies.".

Cab you only get Facets discs from Facets themselves, or do other retailers carry them?

Hey there. :)
I would like to buy BOTH his movies that are out on DVD in Italy, that is CARO DIARIO and LA STANZA DEL FIGLIO (Son's Room).
Does ANYONE know, whether CARO DIARIO has an ENGLISH AUDIO Track or maybe English subs? Please let me know, Italian websites seem to be of different "opinions" here.
Thank you very much,
Sebastian. :)
PS: I posted this also in the Regional forum, but it doesn't really seem to have any visitors, does it? Epstein, do you know more? :)

New announcements from Image Entertaintment:

CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE SE (Antonio Margheriti) 3/19/2002

The horrors of war take on a whole new meaning for Vietnam vet Norman Hopper ("Enter the Dragon's" John Saxon), whose quiet domestic life in Atlanta is shattered by the return of Charlie Bukowski, a combat buddy who dredges up terrifying flashbacks of flesh eating and bloodshed in the war-torn jungles. Now on the run from the law, Charlie begs Norman to help him get out of town with another fellow veteran, Tom ("Shaft's" Tony King). Soon the ragtag team of cannibals are fighting for their lives, spreading a deadly contagion through the city before heading into the sewers for a gut-wrenching climax you won't soon forget! One of the most infamous Italian horror films of all time, "Cannibal Apocalypse" was heavily censored in many countries, but now you can finally experience this thrilling collision of action-packed combat and monstrous horror from cult director Antonio Margheriti (Castle of Blood) in its original gory splendor for the first time in the U.S.!

"Cannibal Apocalypse Redux," an exclusive documentary featuring John Saxon, John Morghen and Antonio Margheriti; "Apocalypse in the Streets," a video tour of filming locations; European Trailer, Japanese Teaser Trailer; Poster and Still Gallery; Cast and Crew Filmographies; "The Butchering of Cannibal Apocalypse," a new text essay; Liner Notes by film journalist Travis Crawford

CRY OF THE OWL SE (Claude Chabrol) 3/19/2002

Winner of one French Academy Award and nominated for a second, hailed by audiences and critics alike, "The Cry of the Owl" is a landmark psychological thriller from director Claude Chabrol, France's Master of Suspense. A peeping tom comes face to face with the object of his obsession, only to find her even more dangerously dysfunctional than himself. Four unstable individuals converge as a doomed love triangle devolves into violence. Unavailable for 15 years, All Day Entertainment restores Chabrol's giddy thriller with a gorgeous letterboxed transfer from the 35mm masters.

RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE (Jean Rollin) 3/19/2002

Cult director Jean Rollin's first feature mixes existentialism and vampirism with the added ingredient of chaos. Originally made as a short, it was expanded to feature length with the dead cast inexplicably returning to life half-way through (having been killed off at the end of the original). That said, "Le Viol du Vampire" is a masterpiece of the bizarre, mixing blood, a naked woman in a convertible, coffins and some fencing, semi-naked nymphs in a fragmented melee.

SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT (Wojciech Has) 3/26/2002

Enter a dazzling, mysterious world of the supernatural courtesy of "The Saragossa Manuscript," a magical text discovered during the Napoleonic Wars by a pair of opposing soldiers. Capt. Alphonse van Worden lives out the book's intricate, devilish storylines as he embarks on a journey across scenic Spain, now populated with ghosts, alluring demons, debauched royalty, and mystical priests. Spanning centuries and nations, the manuscript's reach encompasses a wide array of stories both humorous and horrifying, gleeful and grotesque, before the final chilling revelations bring this one of a kind book to a close. Critically applauded and embraced over the years by such admirers as Jerry Garcia, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese, this swirling tapestry has been restored to its original, full length director's cut with all of its labyrinthine riddles intact.

STAVISKY (Alain Resnais) 3/12/2002

International sensation Jean-Paul Belmondo (Breathless, Le Professionnel) turns on the charm as Serge Alexandre, known to the world as Stavisky. Working his way from small time cons to high society stings, this rascal ignites a scandal in 1930s France by saturating the country with phony vouchers, causing a whirlwind of governmental and economic destruction shortly before World War II. Groundbreaking director Alain Resnais (Last Year At Marienbad, Hiroshima Mon Amour) guides a dazzling cast headed by screen idol Charles Boyer through this timeless saga of deception, romance, and fallen grace, accompanied by a lyrical score from Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim.

CRY OF THE OWL SE (Claude Chabrol) 3/19/2002

If my memory from 15!! years ago is still good, this is not one of Chabrol's better efforts. So lets just say it's being hailed by marketing droids and leave it at that.
Of his recent output, the best one was Rien Ne Va Plus, which is out in a good DVD from MK2 (R2 - France, no subs). Due to Artificial Eye's singularly lame website, I can't figure out if they are releasing it in the UK with subs. Both Blackstar & Bensonsworld allow you to search by studio, but then mix together VHS & DVD. If someone has any idea how to search for A.E. DVD only catalogue please speak up!

how's this?

Incidentally, please don't ever assume that AE are going to release something simply because they have done the VHS version. The Swindler (as the English title is) was a 1997 release, and so is unlikely to be a priority for them. They seem at the moment to be releasing what they released theatrically last year (they are also a film distribution company of some note in the UK). Your best bet would be to hope that Charbol has a newer film out that might prompt people to go in search of his earlier stuff (preferably that AE distro).
As a guess I'd have said that the next AE releases (aside from stuff licensed from MK2) would be The Circle and The Piano Teacher, since they seem to have got most of their other stuff out now.
