I know this is a cheesy question, but i'm curious if any here has tried it. I'm up for anything, as I usually meet people through work, passtimes and friends, but the last while, I've had lousy luck. Most have boyfriends, or, sorry folks, they smoke, which is crappy in terms of , well, its crappy. Anyways, I know people who have, but I'm just curious if anyone here has actually met anyone worth while on the internet. Anybody?

Haven't met anyone online (I have some regular friends I met through emailing though), but tomorrow I'm meeting a girl whose ad I answered in a local free weekly paper (the personals are sort of the main attraction of that paper.) I only got to talk on the phone with her for a few minutes, so I've been anxious from then til tomorrow after work when I finally get to meet her!

Good luck Jesse. You'll feel good to know that I met my wonderful wife via a personal ad! She put an ad in the Dating Page, a personal ad flyer and I responded, we got together, and the rest as they say is history. 5, almost 6 years of wedded bliss so far.
Of course, your mileage may vary. :)

My best friend met his girlfriend through a local online dating service. They've since moved in together, and he's proposing to her any day now. She's a great girl!

Hmmmmm...there's a decent service that covers my local area that I'm trying as a trial service right now. I guess I'll see what its like. Anyone else with any comments?

Josh, hope things are ok with your Snowed-in reschedule!

Tried if for a little bit but quickly came to the realization that all the women had some sort of 'issues'. Not the normal stuff but something else, its hard to explain. There are a few success stories, but those are pretty rare. A lot of the 'ads' placed are placed by porn places or phone chat rooms trying to get people. Most of the 'ads' are fake. Good luck though.

I met my current girlfriend though one of these. I posted an ad "just for fun", not really expecting anything and she wrote to me.

We have only been seeing each other for about a month now, but she is absolutely wonderful and we are both committed to doing what it takes to making this last.

JoeN, that's wonderful. I love to hear stories like that. My situation was similar, I responded to some ads in order to have some fun, find someone to hang out and go to the movies with; I had no plans on getting into a serious relationship, but then the first person who responded ended up being my soul mate. ;)
When I got a second response a few weeks later, I had to turn her down since I was already committed to staying with the first responder. We've been married 5 1/2 years now. :)

I've never responded, but have clicked through the ads for fun. You can see pics and they have lots more space to write info so you can pick someone that's right up your alley. Its kind of like ordering your girlfriend out of a catalog :)

I've met some really nice people through match.com but I've found the online services can become frustrating. Most of the more attractive women I've met have told me they can get upward of 100 emails a week. Chances are, your email just gets lost in the mix. Not getting a response to an email is very commonplace.
Let me recommend "speed dating." I can't tell you how much fun I've had with this. There are an equal number of men and women, you sit and chat one on one, and every few minutes you rotate to another person. You check off on your sheet either "yes" or "no" for that person and your opposite does the same for you. If two people both mark "yes" for each other the organization sends you an email the next day with the person's contact information.
I've met some really great women doing this. And I'm always quite surprised at the number of very attractive women who attend these things. In the Baltimore/D.C. area they have these about once a month and back in November I had dates about twice a week from doing this. Haven't met miss right yet, but at least I'm meeting lots of people. I highly recommend it.
There are many companies that run these types of events, but here are the two I've had experience with.
Hurry Date
Pre Dating
There's also a website where you can search for speed dating organizations by location.

Good luck!

I ran a personal ad through a local flyer back in '96 and met my wife. We've been together ever since. Sometimes, good things just fall in your lap.:)

I posted my profile on an on-line dating service, and a girl actually responded. We've been e-mailing each other for the past 2 1/2 years, and surprisingly, we have never met or spoken to each other.

I go to meet me at hotornot.com. You select girls you want your profile to be shown to. If the click yes to your profile, then you can email back and forth. If you delete them from your match list, they can no longer be emailed by you or the can't email you. I have met a few girls on there and its been relatively good. Match is also a decent one.

My experience with people2people.com has been quite pleasant. For the first time in my life I have more available females than time to date them. I put together a rather modest ad (something along the lines of 'attractive, intelligent well paid young man seeks female for intelligent conversation.') and I'd guess that I've gotten responses from 10% of those I've written to. That's far better than my success rate in bars and clubs (which was somewhere between nil and none).

Without going into too much detail, my date this week didn't work out. :frowning:
Do women on Match.com ever write to the men, or do most of them wait for someone to write to them? I've looked through and seen a few "maybes" but if I spend the money to subscribe will anyone write to me?

That is what I am wondering. Its the investment that I'm hesitating on. There's more than one service out there, so I wonder which is best.

Match.com can be very frustrating. I sent out about 40 emails and received 2 replies. I have two other friends, one uses match.com and another uses matchmaker.com and they both report similar response rates.
I have had three women initiate contact with me and two of them were quite hot :D Both my friends seem quite stunned that I got an unsolicited email. They've never had anyone contact them first.
Needless to say, it takes some time and a lot of patience. But for 20 bucks it's worth a try for a month. Match.com has a 7 day free trial and you can always post an ad free.
Match.com is OK, but I've had much better luck with the speed dating and attending events sponsored by some local social groups.
