Hello,

Certain DVD's and DVD players support the optional "DVD jacket" feature.

When playing the movie press "stop" and instead of a blue or black screen, the "DVD jacket" picture appears. Some players have to be configured to display this option, with others it is automatic.

How prevalent is this feature? I haven't looked extremely hard, but have found them primarily on MGM and some Warner discs. Usually it's just a simple, colorful title and background. The original DVD (has bonus features) of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World has a DVD Jacket.

Any interesting "DVD jackets" out there?

Best regards,

Paul Bigelow

It's about as prevalent as disc title text that some players can display along with chapter times etc on screen or on the player display (Sony's do it for example). Many discs do not have it.

MGM's "Big Country", "Beach Party", "Ski Party / Muscle Beach Party"

Warner's "The Dish"

All have it. Gotta do some more looking!

It's pretty uncommon in r4 - shame, because I quite like the idea.

I know the r1 The Producers has a jacket picture.

My $35 Portland-brand player is the only one I have that can show these! Totally took me by surprise. I went through almost all my discs to check for pictures after finding out I could finally see them.
I found them on most titles from Sony, since I think they invented that feature (though given their recent track record I wouldn't be surprised if they've stopped doing them!) I didn't see any on Universal or Disney/BV titles. Surprisingly Image has been using them for a while, some are just a still of the title card from the movie, but others are rather humorous! The music label "Classic Pictures" has a generic one, and the DVD Demystified disc also has one. I haven't seen any on porno discs, though I'd laugh if there were any- imagine stopping the player in a panic when someone comes in the room only to have something possibly more incriminating come up! :D
Funny how they're called Jacket Pictures though, since most of them aren't pictures of the covers.

Found this setting on my Sony S550D player last year whilse going though the setup looking for any features I might have forgotten about.

I wish more discs utilized this, I like the idea. I wonder how easy it is to make a homemade DVD use this.

They are basically pics of the disc cover, but some are a little more original, like the one from The Thing from Another World, which uses an original image.

Some dvd's show the jacket cover and others show a wallpaper w/ the movie title.

Off the top of my head:

ALL LOTR-wallpaper
Spiderman-cover
ALL Harry Potter-wallpaper
Batman TAS (Legend)-wallpaper
The Patriot(Mel Gibson)-cover
Black Hawk Down(single disc)-cover
Muppets From Space-cover
Matrix Reloaded-wallpaper
Animatrix-wallpaper

As was mentioned earlier, maybe a growing list could be compiled.:)
