It's definitely one of those things that if someone is looking for a pool, it helps out big time, but if someone isn't looking for one, it could really hurt you.
Thanks to all of you, I am no longer considering a pool.
I put a lot of thought into the advice you gave. Here in NJ, there are only 4 months that can be considered pool season. There's a lot of time, effort and (especially) maintenance cost to be considered for 4 months of using the pool.
If I lived in Florida or any other state that was hot year-round, the pool would be a no-brainer. But with a pending mortgage that is already choking me, the thought of pool costs just doesn't make sense.....
...and you guys hit it on the nail about resale. A pool would normally be an added plus in a warm climate state. Here in NJ, I can see how people would avoid even looking at houses with pools.
One thing I found is that every house I looked at with a pool was missing a full, finished basement. In reality, for my home theater needs, I should be looking at homes with a full-finished basement. Of course, that's a question I am going to put forth in another thread.
I was thinking about this last night and as much as my wife and I enjoy our pool, I do not think you would get quite the use out of it in NJ as even we get here in Georgia, we still only get five months use without heating. It does seem to be quite the investment in money and time for five months use. After factoring in the fence and landscaping, we have over $26,000 tied up in ours, just imagine what a home theater that will buy! I think you made the right call.
